Q: want to tile counter top with out using hardboard
It can and will hold up on one condition w/o a backer board. The top must be 2 3/4 ply wood or nova ply( HDF) , not the single layer counter top with the false edge that makes it look like its 1 1/2 thick. Other wise you need a backer board so the tile meets tile codes( ATC and TCA guide lines) for a minimum substrate which is 1 1/4 A few special thing need to be done but it will work. Any questions you can e mail me thru my avatar and check my qualifications GL
Q: We have not picked out the tile yet, is one type better or worse/easier or harder to install?
It okorder /
Q: Glass glue and tiles
Glass glue and the United States seam agent glue gun can be universal, but the real porcelain must use a special glue gun, South Korea imported porcelain stitch without glue gun such as: Chunlan winter rain porcelain dress
Q: I‘m on a tight budget but some people say tile is better I dont know which is best and will last longer and easy to maintain Any ideas what to do?
tile in the bathroom it will hold up better against water linoleum is fine for the kitchen
Q: I am having glass tile installed. It is in a high use area...backsplash with lots of good cooking going on...should it be sealed, and if so by what kind of sealer. The glass tile is frosted. Thanks.
If it weren't for the grout joints, you wouldn't have to apply sealer to the area. Grease and oil splatter from frying will not soak into the glass tiles, but it will soak into the grout joints. Eventually, the grout joints will become discolored and impossible to clean. For that reason, it is a good idea to apply sealer to the area. Keep in mind that you will have to thoroughly clean the area, especially the grout joints, every couple of years and reapply a new coat of sealer. Good luck with your new glass tile backsplash.
Q: just had a tile floor laid and i noticed some were higher than the one next to it in about 6 tiles. my husband says every house will have those. does yours?

Q: We want to pull out our carpeting and use self stick linoleum tiles. What do we need to know?
No. the moisture will soften the joint compound, Buy Flashpatch or Dashpatch, both are floor patching products. Not one knowledgeable answer in all the previous answers. Why do these people who lack any know-how attempt to mislead?
Q: I am tiling my bathroom and in the process of re-tiling the shower stall. I removed the old plastic liner there and now some of the glue remains on the greenboard. Also, some of the green part of the board is ripped of from when the glue came off with the old liner. Some of the paper is flakey in spots. I pulled off some of the loose pieces, but there is more. Now, I‘m an amateur. I was told to use some grout sealer to go over the greenboard. However, since there are flakey pieces of paper from the greenboard on there still, should I simply remove as much as I can before sealing and tiling? Will the seal glue these flakey pieces down and make them secure for tiling? What is your advice? Many thanks!
I have to agree with answer 1. I tile every day of my life, and while greenboard certainly should be used for the balance of a bathroom, I stopped using it around tubs and showers, years ago. Concrete backer board is an industry standard, is not more difficult to install, and actually aids in tile/mortar adhesion properties. While you have the walls gutted, you might add a vapor barrier as well. The issue with patching over the damage is that it may become just as degraded as the original substrate, and I suspect cause you to be unhappy. Steven Wolf Just my two sense
Q: im going to tile the floor next weekend with 16x16 ceramic tile, and i could use some advice2 questions actually...1. when i lay my backerboard, and tape the staggered seams, do i keep that thinset over the tape very thin? im afraid of a hump in the floor when i go to lay tile.2. how much pressure do i apply when seting the tiles in the thinset? ive seen websites that show very little pressure..and some that show alot of pressure. does it need to float on the thinset or mash it down in the thinset. i just want this to turn out good...its my 1st time, and ive done alot of research, but the information varies from person to person. any added advice or tips on this project would be greatly appreciated.
The thinset is self leveling, so do not worry about the bump of the tape. The tiles need to be pressed down enough that the tile cement has a good coverage of the back of the tile. Try one, and see what coverage you get. Then do the same after wards. Sounds a bit difficult, but when you do it, then it will seem very straight forward. Good Luck
Q: Specifically, what type of drill bit is required that won‘t chip the tile.
I have also used a carbide tipped bit on several occasions to drill tile. The key is to have a sharp bit and to use a pointed center punch to put a very small chip in the surface prior to starting to drill the hole. Make the chip at the center of the point where you want the hole by lightly tapping with a hammer. You don't need much of a chip but it keeps the drill bit from wandering around when you first start drilling. Also a variable speed drill that you can start at a very low speed it also helpful.
