Q: What is tower crane?
A: Tower crane is a modern form of balance crane that consist of the same basic parts. Fixed to the ground on a concrete foundation (and sometimes attached to the sides of structures as well), tower cranes often give the best combination of height and lifting capacity and are used in the construction site.

- Q: I have to create a crane to support a dead load for my Engineering Technology class. It can be made out of only 1/8 inch balsa wood and wood glue, and is going to be graded by the ration of weight held to structure weight.Could anybody give me some suggestions as to how to go about designing this thing? - Is this for a nuclear power station? If 2500 Te and 60m really are the specified loads and span then it is likely that it will be used very seldom. In theory you can design for any load to be lifted but maintenance on a crane system that is used once a year (10 years?) is a real problem. The main items to consider are: Availability of winches and bogies which then dictates running beam and rail sizes. For the spanning beam several alternative sizes needed to be designed and then costed. It will be not just weight but transport costs that determine the most efficient sizes The overall height of the crane will then determine the required roof height assuming that the crane is under cover. For comparison the Harland and Wolf cranes in Belfast called Samson and Goliath can lift 840 Tonnes each. Overall design needs to consider speed of travel, acceleration and deceleration rates and a host of other things.

- Hot rails running along side the beams Hot shoes on the crane make contact with the hot rails and slide along the hot rails. Hot rails mounted to the beams by insulating bells. The hot rails can be anywhere in size from trolley wires to rails the size of railroad track rails. AC cranes are usually 3 phase so they will have 3 hot rails. DC cranes will usually have just 2 hot rails. Main disconnect/lock out feeds hot rails. It is usually fused but can also be just a disconnect switch. The same arrangement also is used on the crane's trolley. But in the case of the trolley one set of hot rails feeds the trolley motor. One set of hot rails feeds the main hook {big hook} motor: One set of hot rails feeds the auxiliary hook motor {little hook} motor. If the crane is also used as a Mag crane {Electro magnetic can be used} it will also have a set of hot rails going to the trolley for the magnetic

- Depends on the type - if the building is not that tall, the tower crane could be built by any taller crane (either a mobile one or an existing one on the site). If the building is very tall, a self-erecting crane is usually used; this type has a sort of jack mechanism somewhere in the tower (usually near the bottom), so as it is needed, the existing tower can be lifted, and another tower section is inserted to raise the entire structure, repeating the process as needed as the structure the crane is building gets taller (thus, the crane is building itself as it goes along).
