- Q: We have not picked out the tile yet, is one type better or worse/easier or harder to install?
- Get a tile with a PEI rating of 3 or above. (PEI is a strength scale, 1 being wall tiles and 5 being tiles suitable for high traffic comercial use). You'll need a wetsaw, 1/4 x 1/4 x 1/4 trowel, a grout float, sponge, tile spacers, kneepads, grout, mortar, sealer, grout haze remover, and some time. It's really not that hard just time consuming. Grab a how to book at the local home improvement store. If you have any questions you can IM me too...happy to help out.
- Q: i‘m thinking about laying my own tile. ( this way i could save $2700) yeah, i know its a pain int he butt. BUT i‘m still going to do it because i like doing my own work. I‘m laying down 24x24 tiles. do you have any advice or secrete or techniques to offer? its a straight edge tile so i was thinking about using no spacers. I was also told to spread thinset on the tile in addition to the cement floor.
- 24x24 Porcelain Tile
- Q: How to judge the quality of tiles?
- By judging in the strong light: high finish products, pure color, easy to stick dirty dirt, easy to clean, self-cleaning good. Judgment can be selected in the strong light, from the side carefully observe the product surface of the reflective, the surface is not a small trachoma and pitting, or trachoma and pits little as well. High brightness indicators of the product using a high quality glazed material and a very good glaze process, the light of the reflective good, uniform, so that the visual effect is good, it seems high grade products. Through the touch feel and knock porcelain listening judgment: the choice can be hand gently touch the surface, feeling very smooth and delicate as well. You can also touch the back, feeling "sand sand" fine friction feeling as well. The same specifications of products, good quality, high density of brick feel are more Shen, on the contrary, the quality of the product feel lighter. In addition, you can hit the ceramic surface by hand, generally good ceramic material was knocked out the sound is relatively crisp. And if the sound of vigorous and echo long as percussion bronze bell sound, the porcelainization of a high degree of wear resistance, high flexural strength, low water absorption, not susceptible to pollution; if the sound mute, the porcelain degree is low ( Even the existence of cracks), poor wear resistance, low flexural strength, high water absorption, highly susceptible to pollution.
- Q: Find the number of tiling a 2 * n rectangle with 1 * 2 and 2 * 2, given that the edges of the tiles are parallel to those of the rectangle.
- If you are tiling a 2 * n rectangle with 1 * 2 tiles, you would line up 1 tile along the end measuring 2, then, becasue the other dimension of the tile is 1, you would need n tiles For 2 * 2 tiles you would do the same thing except that each tile would cover 2 units of the side that is n units, so you would need n/2 tiles
- Q: Can I install vinyl tiles in a bathroom. Will it shift over time and look bad. How does moisture affect vinyl tiles?
- It depends on the surface you put them on and the quality of the tiles. In most cases, with cheap peel and stick tiles that adhere to the surface below, they will tend to shrink, curl up at the endges and peel back after a while. It's not so much moisture as temperature changes and poor durability of the thin vinyl and poor adhesive. I'd recommend you use the Home Depot Allure line of peel and stick floating vinyl floor tile that is made by Trafficmaster. I just did a friend's bathroom with that product last weekend and was very impressed. The tiles stick to each other instead of the floor surface beneath so you can put them down over any solid surface and moisture will not effect them. They have a 25 year warranty also. At about $1.79 per square foot it is a pretty good deal and installation is a snap. We covered her entire 6' by 8' bathroom floor in less than 2 hours, including all the cuts around the toilet base and doorway. All you need to install it is a metal framing square or tee square, a sturdy pair of scissors, a measuring tape and a utility knife. Cool product. They make versions that look like tile and others that look and feel like real wood. We used the wood and it looks great. I've also used the Trafficmaster direct adhering commercial grade peel-and-stick tiles in areas that had moisture (an entryway and a powder room) with no problem but I made sure I had good birch plywood underlayment and I sealed it before laying the tile and also ran a bead of silicone caulk around the edges.
- Q: If I start in the middle, I will have to cut tile for both sides. I think I should start in the upper right corner, but my neighbor seems to think it will look out of balance.
- Of course you start in the middle...but then again there are two ways of starting in the middle. Measure the space. Measure the tile and add the thickness of the future grout line. When you expect to cut the tile, and one always expects to cut the tile, you want to make sure that if you in fact begin with a GROUT LINE down the middle, you will have tiles of at least 1/2 the size down the sides. You don't want slivers of cut tile because your tile almost made it to the walls. So you may want a whole tile centered in the entry rather than the grout line. You can always lay the tiles out and see how it will look. Generally you do not want to use a wall as a straight edge, because usually they are neither straight nor parallel, nor perpendicular to other lines. Cutting a tile ever so slightly over a short distance will hide the building's flaws. Over a long distance it might become noticable. When you lay the tile out and you can decide where to end it rather than it automatically ending at a wall or something, you could start a nearly whole or whole tile at the door. Again you don't want a sliver of tile anywhere. If your tile is ceramic and has a stone pattern, be sure to orient them differently so as to minimize the repetitiveness. Never start in a corner.
- Q: A roof tile falls off the roof of a house. An observer inside the house notices that the tile took 0.2 s to pass a 1.6 m window of the house. If the tile feel from rest, how far above the top of the window did it fall from? Give your answer in meters, recall that this is height above the window and has a positive sign, do not enter units.
- Average velocity of tile in falling past window = 1.6/0.2 = 8m/s This is the instantaneous velocity of the tile half way down the window in time. This means that the tile had a velocity of 8m/s 0.1 sec after it reached the top of the window. How long does it take a falling body to attain velocity of 8m/s, v = u +at 8 = 0 + 9.8t t= 8/9.8 t = 0.816sec 0.816 - 0.1 = 0.716 seconds Therefore it reached the top of the window in 0.716 seconds. How far must the tile fall to attain a velocity of 0.716 sec? s = ut + ?*a*t? s = 0 + ?*9.8*0.716? s = 2.5m The tile fell from height 2.5m above the top of the window.
- Q: I need pink ceramic 4x4 tiles to repair an old bathroom. At least 80 of them. Where might I find them?
- 1 st try and determine whos tile it is, this will help cut down the looking time and possibly stop your looking all together .. If you have 1 spare tile look on the back to see if there there is any lettering on the back , this I ll help you with if you need help. Measure the tile , if its 4 3/8 ths you don t need to look at Florida tile, if its 4 1/4 start with American Olean and Interceramic if the tile is 15/20 years or older.. Anything else start by going to tile distributors and tile shops taking a tile or a pc with you. Realizing that you may not get a perfect tile match because of dye lots and shading even after a couple months this can be a problem.. Any questions e mail me through my avatar and I ll be glad to help and you can check my qualifications there .. GL
- Q: I‘m looking to replace a ceramic tile floor in my kitchen with a different style ceramic tile. The contractor says I have two options. He can either lay the new ceramic tile on the old, which will be cheaper than bringing up the old tile but then the floor will be raised 1 to 1 1/2 above current level. Or, he can take up the old ceramic tile but then he‘d have to remove the old layer of plywood and put down a new layer, which will be more labor-intensive and expensive. Is there any other issues regarding these two scenarios that I should take into account?
- The largest advantage to taking up the old floor and replacing the sub floor is that you get a chance to see if there are any underlying problems (i.e. rot, unevenness, cracks). When I had my floor tiles removed and replaced, it was found that the original sub floor was improperly installed, was rotted by the kitchen door, and was hiding some structural issues. Sounds scary I know, but I would rather find out about these things and fix them before laying a new floor than having to rip up said new floor later to fix them.
- Q: There are 5 red tiles, 4 blue tiles 3 green tiles. whats the probablitiy of reaching into the bag and getting a blue tile and then, without replacing that tile, reaching into the bag again and getting a red tile?
- 5+4+3=12 4/12=1/3 1/3X5/11=5/33 so, 5/33 is, if I am correct, your answer.
