- Q: I now want to match the tile and extend it into my living room and dining area. How would I go about finding the same tile?
- yea take it to menards hd or lowes and ask the people in the flooring dept. if they have ever seen anything like it.
- Q: found porcelain floor and wall tile but im not sure if i can use it in the shower,do i have to use ceramic tile
- I completely agree w/ DIY Doc w/ 1 personal preferance..I like the larger tilesPorcelion or otherwise in a standerd size shower..But thats a personal choice 20 year installer GL
- Q: Please help me decide the right color to use. We are renovating our bathroom and I always wanted a navy blue or maroon toilet bowl. Today, I see a perfect navy blue/dark blue toilet bowl but I do not know what is the best color of tiles or walls should I use. We do not like white tiles or walls since it is really hard to maintain. My husband wanted a floor to ceiling wall tiles. Please advise.
- I also like floor to ceiling tile but usually not the whole room, but definitely in the whole tub/shower area. I think the rest of the room should be painted. As for color choices with a navy blue toilet... Thinking into the future and a possible sale of your home someday, I would go with a neutral color tile, possibly using the same tile (floor to ceiling) in the tub/shower area and on the floor of the bathroom. This really makes the whole room appear larger. If you go with the navy toilet bowl, gray and beige shades of tile would both go well and keep the hard-to-change things in the room, neutral. A new owner could easily change out a toilet if they did not appreciate the look of navy as you do but replacing the tile is a big issue. Stay neutral. So, navy bowl, beige or gray tile, sink-?, countertop-neutral complimentary to the tile, walls-shade of gray or beige. You can then add a pop or two of another color to liven up the room if desired. Like red navy towels or throw rug. Or gray print shower curtain. Or a colorful piece of art on the wall.
- Q: Tomorrow I will be laying porcelain tile in my kitchen and need help in figuring out how to cut a hole in the tile for the floor vent? Any input would be appreciated.
- Masonry blade on a skill saw or a grinder. It'll make some noise and a lot of dust, but it will cut the tile.
- Q: my dad is does tile. He has quite a bit of leftover tile from various jobs. Is it possible that we can recycle tile?
- yes, there are several things you can do with them. - use the scraps to cover an old table and now you have one that looks brand new - advertise them on Craig's list - you can use them to cover jars to make candle holders - i have seen some people use scraps of tile to make jewelry - put felt pads on the back of them and make coasters or a trivet - take broken pieces and attach them around the edge of a mirror these are just a few! I'll bet if you tried to get rid of them you would possibly find someone who might even pay you for the leftovers!
- Q: if there are 24 square tiles in a box and there are enough to cover 3 square feet, how big are the tiles?
- 24 tiles/3 sq ft =8 tiles per square foot. Since 8 is not a square, there is no solution, or the tiles cannot be square.
- Q: Does anyone know if I can lay ciramic tile over the dull worn out linoleum floor in my kitchen? I don‘t want to peel up the linolium because of the insane amount of labor it will take, and make the sub floor un even. any suggestions? Will tiles still stick to this material? Thanks!
- You don't have to remove the old linoleum. But, you must prepare the surface for tiling. If the floor flexes at all, you could end up with cracked tiles or grout just by walking on the floor. You also need to put something down over the linoleum surface for the tile to stick to. First, you nail down a layer of hardy-backer. This is about a 1/4 to 3/8-inch cement-based wallboard. Next, you have to float about 1/4 inch of mastic on the hardy-backer to make a nice, flat surface (like pouring a cement floor). You then put about a 15-pound slipsheet on top of the wet mastic and let it set. The slipsheet allows minute movements of the subfloor due to thermal expansion without stressing the set tile. Once the mastic sets (usually overnight), you can begin setting the tile.
- Q: I have granite tiles I want to put on a kitchen countertop. I removed the laminate and underneath is about 1.5 thick of a particle board of some sort. The countertop is very sturdy and the board is in great shape. I know if this stuff get wet, you can have problems, but otherwise it seems to be very sturdy stuff. I know most people will say you need to put down a sheet of hardibacker, but I don‘t see the point. With a top grade thinset, these tiles will definitely adhere to the board extremely well. Grount lines will be extremely tiny and I‘m going to double seal everything with a really good sealer. I don‘t see anyway water is going to penetrate these tiles and thinset and get to the particle board. That‘s really the whole issue, right?
- I personally would rather have hardibacker. Flooring people in my house right now repairing the floor and a joist because it was not used. Not even in an area that gets a lot of water exposure. Consider how often the counter gets wet and cleaned. That may change your mind. Also, you will need to reseal this more often than the product recommendations because of the amount of wear that is involved. Granite is also pourous and can vary on the quality. I just asked the tile/granite guys that are doing my work. Said they would not recomment it in tiles - sheeted granite is a different story.
- Q: i had my floor tiled a few years ago...they had used black grout between white tile and put my island back...just had island moved and there are black stains on the white tiles...can they come out...and how???
- Dilute clorox bleach into a spray bottle (3 part water to 1` part bleach) and spray it on the grout. Wait 5 minutes and rinse. Cheap and effective.
- Q: we are installing 2inch hexagonal tile on the shower floor. anyone have any special tricks to getting them lined up properly? the tile guys have put it down and a lot of the spaces between the tiles are uneven. keep in mind the shower floor slopes a little towards the drain
- you can use commercial spacers or a coin of the correct thickness would also work.
