- Q: We are building a house and were thinking about installing a tiled shower, but I heard from a friend that they get dirty quickly and are very time consuming.
- With all the tile selections today, I would certainly opt for a tile shower, regardless of how long it would take to install. As far as cleaning, you will have to clean any shower surface just as frequently as the next. Just select a tile that does not show water spots. Use the right grout or seal it properly and you should be good to go.
- Q: I have some stick on tile that has come loose in a small hall area at some rental property. can you just lift thme up re-glue them? They are still in great shape.
- You can, but it would be best to find the same tile and replace the tile itself.
- Q: so i bought tile but not the bull nose end pieces cause they did not have them for that tile. I tiled all the way out to the edge of the counter and now need a way to finish the edge. I have seen wood edges but what is this called and how do you do it? does it butt up against the tile of does it go over? is a wet tile saw supposed to leave ugly, chipped edges? bought a Brand new blade and it did not help.
- How To Finish Tile Edges
- Q: The ceramic tile in my kitchen is cracked at a lot of different spots. My guess is the previous owner didn‘t put a thick enough plywood before installing the ceramic tiles. I want to replace them, but I just realized that right now my floor is perfectly leveled with the hallway and living room and adding more plywood would screw it all up. What options do I have to get around this issue?
- Tile Council of North America calls for 1 1/8 thick subfloor over 16 on-center floor joists. Chances are, your subfloor is the original 3/4 tongue-in-groove installed with the house. This would certainly explain the cracking. Here's the thing: adding cement board over plywood does not add structural integrity. You can't use backerboard to achieve the desired thickness-- its purpose is as a bonding agent only. You have to put down more plywood. If you are below rating, there's no option but to increase the thickness of your floor. It may not be level with the rest of the home, but that's what beveled thresholds are for.
- Q: Please help me decide the right color to use. We are renovating our bathroom and I always wanted a navy blue or maroon toilet bowl. Today, I see a perfect navy blue/dark blue toilet bowl but I do not know what is the best color of tiles or walls should I use. We do not like white tiles or walls since it is really hard to maintain. My husband wanted a floor to ceiling wall tiles. Please advise.
- I also like floor to ceiling tile but usually not the whole room, but definitely in the whole tub/shower area. I think the rest of the room should be painted. As for color choices with a navy blue toilet... Thinking into the future and a possible sale of your home someday, I would go with a neutral color tile, possibly using the same tile (floor to ceiling) in the tub/shower area and on the floor of the bathroom. This really makes the whole room appear larger. If you go with the navy toilet bowl, gray and beige shades of tile would both go well and keep the hard-to-change things in the room, neutral. A new owner could easily change out a toilet if they did not appreciate the look of navy as you do but replacing the tile is a big issue. Stay neutral. So, navy bowl, beige or gray tile, sink-?, countertop-neutral complimentary to the tile, walls-shade of gray or beige. You can then add a pop or two of another color to liven up the room if desired. Like red navy towels or throw rug. Or gray print shower curtain. Or a colorful piece of art on the wall.
- Q: Do I want to use the concavity of a marble tiles to make a TV backdrop, right? Help designers,
- This is not very good to do, consider the next hand-painted, the effect is good, I also Nanning,
- Q: My friend‘s bathroom floor is light-colored marble tile. His new navy blue shower mat bled navy dye and stained the tile. It‘s pretty soaked into the tile and won‘t wipe off. Is it a lost cause to try to remove it, or does anyone have any ideas to get the stain out? Thanks a lot!
- Marble tile flooring can be quite expensive and the flooring cost may be more than what you have budgeted. However if you have still desire to install marble tile flooring then you have another option that is synthetic marble tile flooring. Synthetic marble tiles are cheaper than the original marble tiles. But at the same time you cannot expect the durability and bright beauty of original marble tiles from the synthetic version.
- Q: If I start in the middle, I will have to cut tile for both sides. I think I should start in the upper right corner, but my neighbor seems to think it will look out of balance.
- When laying tiles always start with perfectly orthogonal lines intersecting in the center of your space. That's where you begin laying the tiles. The smaller the space, the more any imperfection will show.
- Q: I need to know if flexbond is the best stuff to use for this type of job for a do it yourselfer. I have never worked with this stuff. I have only used regular thin set mortar in the past. Is it hard to work with?? And to lay the tiles this large do I have to butter the mortar on or can I just trowel it onto the plywood floor? Thanks, Fran
- Tile and use almost as a regular thin set. Flexbond like any stronger thin set will tend to set up a bit faster than standard thin set . This because of the added latex in the thin set. Mix a bit less than normal. Mix and let set for 5/10 minutes and mix again, being very important when using extra modified thin set. Although this is a stronger thin set and will bond to ply wood. But the minimum substrate thickness must be met to be able tile tile over. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there.. GL
- Q: My marble counter top is made of tiles. We bought the house and the previous owners installed them. my problem is that the grouts between are chipped and stained. how can i repair them to look new again?
- Tile stores sell a tool to remove old grout. Only a few dollars. You can remove and regrout, not a difficult job. You can buy stain proof grout that is pre-mixed. Follow instructions on the label. You will love the results.
