One of the things to be aware of if you are a bit of a handyman and want to build your own solar panel is the efficiency of the solar cell. This is important because, although you can, link up several solar cells to build your own solar panel at a fraction of the cost of commercial panels relatively easily, you will need to invest in solar cells.
Now, what we are doing here is two things, primarily we are wanting to cut our electricity bills by installing solar panels. The second object is to save money by doing it ourselves. Now this is where the efficiency of the solar cells are important. We need to balance cost against efficiency if we really want to save money because it is the final cost of your homes solar energy system that matters.
OK, right now you are probably think, yeah, well of course, the better the solar cells I install, the more efficient the system will be and the more money I will save. And you would be wrong.
We have talked about the different ways of producing solar cells in other articles, but in simple terms, there are two types we will look at here. Polycrystalline and mono crysalline.
Polycrystalline cells are build from small, multiple slices of silicon, whereas mono crystalline cells are built from one, larger slice. The later cells are certainly more efficient, a poly cell is rated somewhere between 16% and 20% efficient, a mono cell can be rated around 30% efficiency level. Logic would dictate that we should build our own panels with 30% efficiency panels. But wait a moment.
Mono crystalline panels are more complex to manufacture, their cost can, be several times more than polycrystalline. Ahh, now maybe the maths start to tumble into place, we are gaining a 10% increase in generation but at what cost? It may well be that we are not actually saving money at all.
So this is what we mean when we say you need to look past the sales talk and hype and balance the efficiency of the solar cell you are thinking of against the total cost to work out if it is economical or not.
- Q: Can solar panels be used to power a hotel?
- Yes, solar panels can be used to power a hotel. Solar panels convert sunlight into electricity, which can be used to meet the energy needs of a hotel. By installing a sufficient number of solar panels, a hotel can generate enough power to run its various systems, including lighting, heating, cooling, and other electrical appliances. - Q: Solar panel packages have different levels of power. For instance you can get a kw system but is this kw per hour or day. How does this work?
- That means if you stick a watt meter on the output when there is maximum design sunlight on it you will get kw. If you shine the maximum design sunlight on it for hour then you get kw hour of power. In one day you get 24kw hours assuming you can get 24 hours of maximum design sunlight. Your home electric bill is typically in kw hours. At the macro level power is traded at megawatt hours.
- Q: Can solar panels be installed in shaded areas?
- Solar panels can still be installed in shaded areas, but their efficiency and overall energy production may be significantly reduced. Shading can block sunlight from reaching the panels, limiting their ability to generate electricity. It is always recommended to install solar panels in areas with maximum sun exposure to ensure optimal performance.

- If that solar panel came with the car, the panel is most likely defective. Make sure you're in bright sunlight, and try holding the car so that the wheels are not touching the ground. If the wheels still won't turn, even slowly, then the panel is bad. If each person in the class got one, see if you can try your panel on a friend's car, or their panel on your car. If this is just any little panel, it could be that the panel simply does not have enough voltage, current, or both to power the motor on the car.
- Q: When you add a load resistor to a PV panel (Solar panel) of 00 ohms what happens to the voltage produced from the cellAlso, as the resistance increases, how does this affect the output voltage
- Photovoltaic cells have a load curve that gives the power conversion based on the current drawn. This makes it harder to calculate. For instance, at infinite resistance, the solar cell will have a peak voltage that produces no power (P=I*V=V^2/r). At short circuit, the voltage collapses to essentially nothing and so the power is almost nothing. There is an optimal load (sweet spot) where the resistance applied will draw the most power out of the cell while not overloading it. This measure is either given by the manufacturer or found experimentally. Upon taking a lit panel that has no load and applying a 00 ohm resistance, the voltage will drop. By how much is entirely dependent on the array layout and specific cell characteristics. As the resistance drops from the optimal load point, the voltage collapses fairly sharply. As the resistance increases from the optimal load point, the voltage will rise more at first and then level off to the peak or no-load voltage.

- It's not really the solar panels that power the house, they charge a battery bank and there's an inverter that jumps the battery power up to household current level. If you start getting into more expensive systems, they can sense when the batteries are full and start diverting power into the local electric grid. Some places the electric company is required to pay you for generating current, other places tell you tough luck. I suggest looking on OKorder or something at some of the home solar kits on sale there and look at how large a house they are rated for to get an idea of how big a system you're going to need. I don't know if you have access to the power bill history of the house you're getting in Dubai, but the power company there might be able to provide you with a history of average kW hours the house consumes. A 2400 sqft house with a gas stove and a gas water heater and wood heat is going to consume far less electricity than a house with all electric appliances and the consumption history of an individual house should reflect that so you can buy appropriately.

- Actually they do make these... u have one but the voltage is no guaranteed as depends on the radiation from sunlight. I have a 8v 60Watt folding solar panel... works great and does charge laptop but not consistent. It works better when you also have an external battery with you as well. Battery will charge laptop Solar panel will charge battery Also most important... put laptop screen on super dim / power savior mode or else laptop will eat up energy. I have a desktop replacement hp laptop and able to keep it charged at 9volts just under 2amps... (38 watts)... on power save mode of course ALLPOWERS 8v 60Watt folding solar panel charger Also....
