- Q: Hi, i want to please a solar panel in Lima Peru, my Latitude is -2 and longitude -77. I understand that since i am in the southern hemisphere, my panel should be pointing north. However, i am using a program called pvdesigner, and according to this, y should face my panel with and azimuth of 00degrees (0 = south) and a tilt of 60degrees. Does this make any sense?thanks
- Typically, solar panels are installed facing the same as your latitude = 2 degrees to the North measured from horizontal. 60 degrees from vertical = 30 degrees from horzontal will give almost as much power in June as in December = beginning of Summer. You can face your panels straight up = zero tilt from vertical = better for December/ not so good in June. Usually, the same tilt as your North facing roof is best as it simplifies installation and reduces wind loading. Shade from trees etc will much reduce the power you get. Neil

- Good news and not so good news. You need to be able to access the panels to clean the snow off. There is not any heat generated other than the heat of the sun hitting the black colour - which would amount to some melting ability during a sunny day - but it isn't sunny when it snows! Apparently, solar panels work better in the cold and where snow can reflect light so to increase the amount of light - photons - hitting the panel.

- Heat is not transferred by solar panels into electrical currents. For that you need TEC or Peltier devices which at the present time are too small to do much in changing heat to electricity. You are better off collecting the heat in a solar water heater then a solar panel. Now solar panels work by the photons hitting the panel and playing kind of a billiards game. One hopes the photon will knock off an electron and the now free floating electron will make its way to your wire.

- For water heater type of solar panel the hot panel has more radiation losses reducing the heat available to be transferred to the water. In PV panels it has got to be characteristics of the PV cells. If the conversion efficiency drops with temperature rise then only this can happen. PV=photo-voltaic

- Aren't there any safety or efficiency standards you have to comply with? If I were buying solar panels I'd want to be sure the manufacturer was competent and licensed as a manufacturer/retailer. If someone brought a case against you for something that went wrong, and the brand name components were named as part of the problem, then yes, those brand name companies would certainly think there was a legal complication. Just do your research first. Your local chamber of commerce or university legal department would be able to help you.
