- Q: I have an old remote control air plane rechargeable battery I want to use for something else. The problem is I need it 9.6V and the two packs of 5 cells is 6V each. I want to combine the two 6V into an 8 cell 9.6V but I can't seem to split them apart. Currently I'm discharging them through the old airplane motor that they came with. First off, should I be messing with them. If so, is running them through a motor a good way to discharge them, and finally how should I go about separating them so I can recombine them?
- Those 6V battery pack was packed with hard glue and welded joints. Separating them is not an easy task as you though without any proper tool. Besides, most old old rechargeable battery pack 50% inside the cells were dried out or leakage or shorted due to aging. Not much chance to rebuild them into a workable 9.6V pack.

- That's not really a question anyone can answer. When anyone, a company or otherwise tries to give battery life, the answer is always estimate, usually over estimated, and reflects optimum usage patterns etc. If you can find them, look for Sanyo AA Eneloops, which are superior, and hold their charge for a -long- time, whereas NiMH batteries lose 80% of charge after a month roughly.
- Q: I bought an external battery pack recently to charge my phone on the go. My phone's battery has a 1900mAh capacity and the pack has a capacity of 5200mAh, a little over twice the size of my phones battery. However, the battery pack only has enough juice to charge my phone fully once, and then about a quarter full. The pack is advertised to only have enough to charge an iPhone 4's battery twice, which is a 1450mAh battery, so the company didn't falsely advertise. - You could do what a lot of radio control guys do and build yourself a simple bulb dis-charger. I don't know where you can find bulbs that can handle 18 volts. I would think most automotive bulbs would burn out @ 18 volts, but it doesn't hurt to try. You need to remember that the bulbs will get hot. I have seen way better examples of a bulb dis-charger, but this will get you started.
