Q: I know that NiMH batteries self-discharge over time, but mine are discharging in just a matter of hours. I am using them in a RC airplane. They are 9.6V 650mah AAA packs. I charge them up just as they should be and they put out full power when I test them in my plane. I go to the gym for a couple hours and stop by the flying field on the way home, but when I plug the battery in the motor on the airplane immediately goes to cut-off.An interesting note: If I hold the arming button down to keep the motor going, eventually it will work itself up to putting out enough power to do some low powered flight and will last the duration over normal flight time for the airplane
The battery pack is new to you, but it could have been on the shelf in the store or a warehouse for a very long time, easily a couple of years. A single bad cell can ruin a battery pack. 1) One of the cells might have gone bad and can't hold much charge, so it depletes quickly during discharge. The available battery voltage then is 9.6 - 1.2 8.4 volts. As current flows through the bad cell the current reverse-charges the cell, and the available voltage drops to 8.4 - 1.2 7.2 volts. 2) When a motor starts it requires a high current, and this drops the voltage out of the battery due to the internal resistance of the battery. If one cell is bad then the internal resistance is very high. Once the motor is running the required current is less, so the internal resistance of the battery is less, and the battery is able to maintain an adequate voltage. Factories do not test the cells to match their discharge cycles. This can happen to any battery. Car batteries, sealed lead-acid batteries, nickel-cadmium batteries, nickel-metal hydride batteries, lithium batteries. extra : This is a huge problem for any large power-storage system, from solar-cell systems to hospitals and server farms. They use large battery banks to give them ride-over time until they can get their gasoline/diesel/natgas generators running. Monitoring each cell in a battery requires special electronics and in the past was not worth the trouble due to the cost. There are now electronic designs that will do this monitoring, but it's not going to be done for cheap RC battery packs.
Q: I bought a pack of 4 Duracell rechargeable batteries with the charger for my camera and I plugged it in yesterday this time to charge all 4.It is almost 24 hours past and the red light is still on.My camera doesnt show me if the battery is charged all the way or not, it just indicates when its about to die so I dont know if the batteries are fully charged properly.Anyone know why I still get a red light?
Usually when you buy new rechargable batteries they have to be conditioned before use. This means a long first charge, so it could be that this is what the charger is doing. If you are using the charger that came with the camera (does it plug directly into the camera?), this can be a problem. It is always best to give 1st charges with a conventional battery charger, preferably one that charges each battery individually and is 'intelligent' enough to cut the charge when done. You don't mention the milliamp rating for the batteries. I suspect your camera charges at a very low rate and if the batteries themselves are a high capacity (2,500mA or above), this can take a long time. I think it is probably safe enough to try the batteries now. Just make sure you run them flat before charging again. It could also be that if the batteries are a very high capacity and your camera is not a recent one, then it may have trouble recognising the extra capacity of these batteries. It's like a mobile handset that states it will work with SD cards up to 2Gb, so if you put a 4GB in , it will either not work at all, or would just recognise 2GB of the card's capacity.
Q: 3.6v lithium battery how to become 36v battery pack?
10000mah can be made up of five 2000mah batteries in parallel, 36V 10000mah by 10 10000mah battery pack and made together.
Q: I am using an ACER laptop in particular. So, is it safe to use the laptop when it is directly plugged in (battery pack removed)? I only do this while gaming and i think it preserves battery life if I do this.
I'm doing this right now with my Acer laptop! I think it's totally safe, it's better to keep your battery out so that it doesn't fry. If you keep the battery out but the charger in, this is still a source of power and is safe. I've kept my battery out since I've got it, cos I don't wanna ruin it, fry it or ruin the battery life or something. :)
Q: I have an old remote control air plane rechargeable battery I want to use for something else. The problem is I need it 9.6V and the two packs of 5 cells is 6V each. I want to combine the two 6V into an 8 cell 9.6V but I can't seem to split them apart. Currently I'm discharging them through the old airplane motor that they came with. First off, should I be messing with them. If so, is running them through a motor a good way to discharge them, and finally how should I go about separating them so I can recombine them?
Those 6V battery pack was packed with hard glue and welded joints. Separating them is not an easy task as you though without any proper tool. Besides, most old old rechargeable battery pack 50% inside the cells were dried out or leakage or shorted due to aging. Not much chance to rebuild them into a workable 9.6V pack.
Q: Hi I have dead NiCd battery that measured 0 volts. No matter how long you put this thing in the carger, it just woudn't hold any charge? Is there any known way to resurrect this battery? Non-commercially?
I have found a way to restore NiCd batteries that seems to work even when they no longer will take any charge (battery charger light off). It is a variation of the battery in a freezer. I live in the north where winter temperatures fluctuate from -20F to 60F or higher in a day inside a car that is parked outside. So I took some NiCd batteries and put them in a plastic bag with the intention of dropping at the recycle place. I forgot about them and they sat in the car for several months. At night the temp would drop to anywhere between -20F to 0F. During the day the temp would rise inside the car due to sunshine to being 10 to 20 degrees above outside air temp. When I noticed the batteries in the spring, I decided to see if they would take a charge. The took a charge again where before the battery charger light would not even light up. It took a long to charge them up but they worked like new. You can do the same in a freezer by putting them in the freezer overnight and then taking them out in the morning. Repeat. I do not know what the minimum number of cold and warming cycles are necessary but in my case it was about 90 cycles.
Q: How do I calculate the number of UPS delay battery packs?
0.5KVA UPS is back-up, no external battery. The smallest on-line is 1K, no 0.5K.
Q: I am thinking if the bike comes with SLA batteries of 10Ah, I could cheaply make a NiMH pack with 2Ah (bunch of AA cells) to boost performance. I am thinking of connecting it parallel to the SLA batteries (+ to +, - to -). I am thinking this will slow the discharge rate on the SLA and also reduce the depth of discharge, causing the SLA batteries to have much a longer life cycle.

Q: I lost the plug to charge my tv baby monitor. I really need this monitor asap. I have a 6 yr old, a 2 yr old and a 3 month old. I can't be with them all at once so it's a big help. I removed the battery pack from the handheld tv and it has a small red and small black wire with a little plastic piece that inserts into the tv. Can I remove these batteries and put my charged AA batteries in place?
Yes if the original batteries are removable there should be no problem.A rechargeable battery is 1.2 volts x 4 equals 4.8 volts. They are usually placed in the packs for convenience. I have done this with other items.
Q: How do rechargeable batteries work? I need to write a paragraph on them, so it can be brief information I've searched google and couldn't find much
keep looking.
