- I have a teddy bear she's got rather big, so she wouldn't fit through tubes very well. She also loves chewing (she'd be out of a plastic cage in no time). The cage i have is a plastic bottom (4-5 inches deep) wire top. This way, she has her hidy bit 'downstairs' under the shelves the second level to run around on. The wire also provides lots of places to hang toys treats. They are very easy to clean too. I have the cage in the pic below, but ive made my hammy a d.i.y shelf on one side a mini shelving tower put in on the other side. Good luck
