- Q: how do u use hair dryer to put plastic on windows?
- It is for taking the wrinkles out of the plastic so it is airtight. Just put it as hot as it can go and blow on the wrinkles in the plastic until you get all the wrinkles out. Good luck!
- Q: I rent a townhouse that has very old windows.. LL will not replace them so im thinking of puttng plastic over the wndows.. we are not aloud to put plastic outside.,. Can anyone tell me..should it be thick plastic? should i staple it? or just tape? when i lay on my bed or couch i can feel the draft and the curtans move.. these wndows are terrible!! any help on the whole insulating thing would be great.. i hate having my heat on 78 just to be somewhat warm cause all the cold ar is still blowng in.. for some reason the heating vents are close to the wndows.. defeats the purpose if you ask me..
- Have you checked the condition of the glazing around the windows? That's the putty that both holds the window in keeps the draft out.... you can get some from a hardware store patch where it's missing... use a putty knife, or even a butter knife... Get a deflector to direct the heat into the middle of the room- also hardware store, or maybe improvise something-

- Frost KIng and 3M make these window film treatments that you are talking about...You can buy either one at a home depot/Lowes/Menards /Ace Hardware or True Value. YOu are correct ...Use a home hair dryer after apllying the film to a clean perimeter of the insde window and it will shrink to a drum tight and air tight enclsoure. Come spring time you simply need to peel it off and you are back to the summer mode...HOwever you will have to re purchase again for next winter..But for the price you get a lot of value...The 3M is by far the superior product due to the adhesives used on the border and the mil thickness of the palstic...Of o =course you pay more as well ..

- you can try paint thinner on a rag .....not sure if it will take the stain out of the plastic or not but it should get the chalk off without a problem. not sure what to tell you about the rip in the window tho....sorry. hope the paint thinner works for you, just use caution cause the thinner is a harsh chemical. good luck. it might burn ur skin a little but wash with soap and water afterwards....your skin and the window to play it safe.

Well, its July here and keeping the cold out is no longer a concern. The plastic looks terrible and if its not serving a purpose, I'd like to take it down for the summer and fall season. So, is the plastic keeping the heat out right now? Does it serve a purpose?
- It serves the purpose of making your home a sauna, so remove it. Also if you like fresh circulated air from a cool clear night you're not going to get it leaving the plastic up. It literally takes less than 5 minutes per window to re-apply before winter and the kits only cost about 10-15 bucks with enough for 10 windows. Take it down already.

- The plastic window kits that shrink (via a hairdryer) work well. No need to weatherstrip them as well.

- Yes plastic will decrease the amount of light that penetrates the window. Most clear plastics are rated for how much light they let penetrate when new and as the plastic ages, it will let in less light. You may be able to find this information online if you know the type of plastic you are going to use. Try looking up light ratings or opacity for the plastic you have or ask where you plan to buy it. I can't remember the exact numbers, but clear to slightly opaque plastics usually decrease light by about 10-30%. Ten to fifteen percent should be okay for most sunny windows.
- Q: I tried cleaning my plastic windows in my truck with water thinking if i wiped it up right away it wouldn't leave any spots but it did... I'm not trying to buy anything expensive and I was under the impression you don't use windex on plastic... Any ideas?
- just use the window cleaner that you put in cars, i use this al the time, i buy a gallon of the cleaner, pour some of it out and add a bottle of rubbing alcohol in it.
