- Q: Hello. The office we work in has what we believe to be vinyl tiles, 12x12, with a white powdery substance that is always on the floor. It looks as though the tile has never been sealed before so I‘m not sure if this is the cause. I have read online about efflorescence. Could this be that? I‘m really nervous because I don‘t know if it is asbestos. There are a few people in this area, and our chairs are constantly rolling around on the floor. I would say that the floor is just worn down because of the high traffic but I just wanted opinions on what it could be. This powder gets on the bottom of our chairs and our shoes. - Hi, I work in the building trade have had to do basic asbestos awarenesss training.Asbestos was used in floor tiles into the 1970's- But I strongly recommend you look on the Health Safety web site this will give you advice on were to go for help. If in ANY doubt you must check this out urgently, please don'tt put it off- asbestos kills.
- Q: I accidentally tiled over an outlet cover. What can I do to fix this issue with out having to remove all the tile?
- Go to the electrical section of your home improvement store and purchase an electrical proximity tester. This device looks like a big pencil and will light and beep when it comes near live wiring. You can use it to locate the outlet underneath your tile. Mark the location. Clear away the grout from the tile(s) covering your outlet and remove those tiles. Cut new tiles to fit around your outlet. What I don't understand is how you could cover up outlets, as obvious as they are.
- Q: Not sure it it‘s mold/mildew ot the sealer stripping off. I‘ve used Tilex but it didn‘t work. Even scrubbed it with a stiff brush. Anyone know what this film is and how to get it off?
- Are these tiles applied directly to a concrete floor that sits on the ground? If so, it sounds like efflorescence, where salt moves from the ground into the floor and then through the tile appearing as a white film on the surface of the tile (it happens through basement walls and if bricks are placed on the ground). Scrubbing may not be enough. You may have to check at your local hardware store for a sealer for your tiles or a cleaner strong enough to prevent the film from forming again.

- There okorder / it recommends not using floor tile paint in places such as bathrooms where there is moisture. I guess you could paint the floor a week or two before putting it on the market - a case of buyer beware if it all scrapes off 6 months later - but the paint is quite expensive so I wouldn't personally go down this route myself - as it's not a nice thing to happen for the unsuspecting buyers. I'm guessing that currently the floor is more of an eyesore as you haven't integrated this into your current bathroom design? Personally, I would ditch the painting idea and buy a decent off-cut of lino and cover up the old floor tiles since you only have a small area to work with. Lino nowadays comes in many guises/patterns and since it's a small area you can check all local companies for offcuts of perhaps the more expensive pseudo 'wood' type lino etc... You may spend ?50 but it will brighten the room and transform it into a more modern look - and ultimately will help you get your asking price. (You could also tell the buyers that the original green tiles are still underneath and they could reveal them if they wanted to...just don't tell them how ugly they are...the secret is to get them excited about new possibilities in the future!!) LOL Fingers crossed that your house sells quickly in the Spring. xx
