- Zocko is correct. Also the concrete board underlayment should be screwed to the sub floor as recommended by the manufacturer. 8 o.c.? Also the joints in the concrete boards should be staggered to achieve maximum strength and not encourage long weak lines. If there is any deflection or movement noticed when heavy loads are moved across the floor after the concrete board has been installed, look for the reason and solve it. Otherwise you will be called back to fix grout pop outs and then you will have to solve the movement problem. If the plywood is less than 3/4 or the joist spacing is greater than 16 you should be concerned.

- Make sure the floor is clean and all the old glue from previous installations has been removed. Pop a chalk mark from opposing walls so they cross in the center of the room. Start at the center and work towards the walls so that everything looks even all the way around when you're finished. If the tiles have lines or a pattern running in one direction then turn every other tile 90 degrees or it will look wavery. To help the tiles stick, stack them up and let an electric heater blow on them for 30 minutes prior to starting installation. Warm tiles are a lot easier to lay and get butted up without cracks between them.

- Any rocking means the tile is hitting either a high spot or there is a low spot. Low spots can be dealt with the thin set. As long as its less than a 1/4. High spots usually needs to be ground down flat. So to answer your question , for ease of installation and the prevention of cracked tiles at a later date, floors need to be as flat as possible. If you have minor rocking with no thin set down, in some cases a larger sized trowel will do the trick. Each case is different and has to be dealt with differently. - Prep your counter to meet tile standards, Each one can be different so with out knowing what yours is I cant say there. You ll need to figure what you want to do with the edge to trim it out. You can use a tile bull nose or a wood trim. Spread the needed glue, usually a thin set , over a small area. Then you can break tiles , ( very carefully) with a hammer or a pair of tile nippers. I use tile nippers to create the piece effect. These methods are called rubble effect. You ll need a honing stone to hone the tile edges so they are not sharp. Set into the wet glue, don t let it skim over or become dry. Grout as needed depending on what type of tile you use. - Q: Some red nail polish was spilled on my tile bathroom floor. What can I use to remove it? Nail polish remover would be an obvious choice, but it only removes the glob of polish and not the color. Any suggestions?
- Tile comes many different ways. Is it natural stone like travertine or slate? It could also be ceramic or porcelain. Each product holds up differently. In any event, I hope it's a sealed or glazed product. If it doesn't have a glaze and is still porous, you're not getting the polish out. If the tile has a texture, you won't be able to scrape anything out either. Bleach won't help. I'm afraid that if the nail polish remover doesn't get it out, it may be permanent. The only thought I can offer is to get more of the same color grout that was used between the tiles. If your tile is porous or isn't smooth, there may already be grout on the surface of the tile. Regrouting the tile may help hide the nail polish. Sorry!

- Most soaps leave a film on tiles I purchased a steam mop, just cleans the tires with steam and leaves no film or residue, they look like they did when they were first laid. See if you can borrow one from some one to give it a try. You will love it. Good Luck

- Yes, there is tile/ceramic paint- several brands- all stocked by home improvement stores. The key element is the prepping. The old tiles and grouting need to be clean -and then cleaned again with the manufacturers suggested cleaner. You can decorate tiles, or change the color of the entire wall. Once the paint is dry, it is waterproof . It takes a bit of time, but with care, you should be able to do almost all the cleaning prep the day before and then just do the final cleaning and paint on the project day. Worst case, do one wall at time. It does not hurt to practice the entire process on one tile- preferably the tile hardest to see when you are on the outside looking in.
