- If you have any loose pcs not yet installed the backs can give me clues as to what it is. Along with the year it was originally installed ( approx) and the exact size of the tile.. Any thing over 8/10 years old you may as well look for some thing close in the exact size. Beyond that your looking at reclaimed tile discount outlets looking for dropped tile lines. There is a few places that specialize in buying and selling of dropped lines of tiles. They change and discontinue tiles every 7/10 years to keep up with changing styles and colors patterns. - Q: Do you have, or know someone who has these tiles in the bathroom? What is their experience?
- They will probably work okay as long as your surface is good so the adhesive works, but a much better product is the new type of vinyl tiles which stick to each other but not to the floor. You won't have any adhesion problems, and water cannot get between the tiles. Trafficmaster at Home Depot is one type. That is the one I have and it has been excellent. It's been in my kitchen and both bathrooms for 5 years and is showing no signs of lifting anywhere. I really don't know why anyone would bother with the old peel 'n' stick type of tile any more.
- Q: I am having carpet professionally install, but would like to tile my dinning area. Should I install the tiles first? And how should I leave the transition area of the tile?
- Yes you should. The last thing that goes in should be your carpet. Out of all types of flooring, the first thing that goes in should be the dirtiest which is typically the ceramic tile. So start with the tile finish up with the grout and you can now install the carpet. Hope this helps. ;-)
- Q: I have a 15x15 tile that is on the floor in front of a gas fireplace (never been used) that has a hairline crack in it. The tile is one of 4 on the floor and matches 8 others that ring the face of the gas fireplace, the bathrooms and the kitchen. I cannot find the same tile to replace it. There is no elevation difference across the crack.Is there a method to fill the hairline crack so it doesn‘t stand out like a sore thumb?
- If you must replace it. (because it is not yours and you will have to pay) It can be matched very closely as 15 is not common replace the 4. Being in a different area the difference should no show. Remove the grout around the tile with a grout remover (its a scraper, ask at the hardware store). It can also be removed with a Dremmel tool and carbide tips. Use a center punch and hammer to crack the offending tile into pieces and then pick and scrape the tile and old mastic out. You have to get it ALL out. Be sure not to use surrounding tiles for leverage. You can then place new mastic and eyeball the tile for proper placement or purchase tile spacers when you get the grout removal tool. You should measure how wide the grout lines are. Use a trowel that places mastic at the proper height (measure how thick it is under the other tiles once you have your tile out and the hole is clean) for example if your mastic under the remaining tiles is 1/8th inch that is the notch to use. When placing the tile place enough pressure to make it level with the other tiles. wait 1 day with NO TRAFFIC and re-grout.

- I ve worked with tiles for over 20 years and I find no difference in tiles from different areas such a Italian , Indian .USA, Brazil, China etc. They all have excellent and garbage tiles. The vitrified tiles is a type of tile as is ceramic and porcelains. Usually a bit harder bodied and the the sizing is better on vitrified tiles. Get what coloring and style fits your needs. - Q: When the stick on tiles have come loose you get ready to re-glue them. What exactly do you clean the cement under neath them or do you just scrape it clean?
- Mineral spirits will dissolve most adhesives but sometimes you may need xylene or denatured alcohol. Using two sided tape, the good kind that is not cheap at home centers that is made for outdoor carpet for example should work better than most things to stick them down.
- Q: Can you put linoleum over tile?
- First of all, you really need to check with your landlord/lady before putting anything down on the floor. I've never lived in a rental where I could paint the walls much less mess with the flooring! That having been said, no, you cannot just put vinyl over tile since vinyl conforms to whatever is underneath it, it will take on the contour of the tile and warp and gap. You'd really need to take up the tile, and depending on what type of subfloor you have, you would either have to sand the concrete and put an underlayment over that or lay hardibacker on a wood subfloor, all of which will be more costly and time consuming than I'm sure you would be willing to invest in a rental, not to mention the fact that I'm sure your landlord/lady will pitch a fit if you do it without his/her consent. I say just live with it. Put down some throw rugs if it bothers you that much.

- Not at all. You just wasted some vinegar and it might take longer for the smell to go away.
