- Q:The tile of my garage is 10 years old. The house was abandoned and I bought it. The tile that was used was a textured ceramic tile. I‘ve tried brushing it and washing it with different products but it goes back to a dusty look. Any ideas on how to bring it back to life other than paying to get it polished by a professional. Thank you in advanced.
- If you don't want to pay for the labor to have it cleaned, you will be the one to do it yourself. Elbo Grease. Get some Tile Acid Cleaner from the Home dpot/Lowes, and a couple of hand held scrub brushes, some plastic bristles, some metal bristles, (to see which works best). Get a spray bottle, poor the acid into it. do not delut with water. Not until after it has sat on it for 5 min and you have scrubbed and scrubbed. Then spray with water (lightly Misting) and wipe up with disposable towels. Dont forget the rubber gloves. After the entire floor is finished or until you are satisfied (or if you want to do in Stages) wait until entirely dry and get some Tile Sealer and begin to apply. Pay attention to the grout lines first then mop all over the tile. The cost for materials will be about $50--$70 But the labor is where the real money is. Have Fun I do not envy you.
- Q:I want to add a backsplash with a 4x4 ceramic tile. I only want to go up 1 or 2 tiles in height not the whole wall area. Edges of the tiles are not black for the unfinished ceramic. How do I make the edges look finished or black also?
- The edging tiles are the best way to go as everyone has said. If you are on a tight budget, you can use wood trim, like a small quarter round, and paint it to match the tile.
- Q:1. Why floor tiles can pop up?2. What we can do to avoid that?
- Bad prep when putting the tiles down - Cheap tiles (or Cheap adhesive) - Excessive water (either standing water or water continuing to leak in the same area) - Clean the area before placing the tiles - Buy the right tiles adheasive for the area your doing. - Keep water from pooling-up on tiles
- Q:We bought a house that has a fully covered sunroom with large glass windows and metal framing. Right now i have ugly green caret in there, but i want tiles. Can i tile over a flat cement surface. What tiles do i use porcelan or ceramic? It gets below freezing in the winter time(NE Ohio) and i want to make sure that it could withstand some water.
- Often Home-Depot ,Lowe's and others have a training season for doing tile , sheetrock , painting ... just check with your local store to see if they have these and when. I have gone to some and they are informative Yes, ceramic tile does go on cement very well
- Q:Last year I had my bathroom remodeled. I had a new tub and tile installed. I asked the tile man to put the tiles together and not to have grout lines. He insisted that they HAD to have grout. I told him to put in the smallest, narrowest grout line as possible. Well now the tile grout is looking yucky. I know how to clean it so that is not the question. I just want to know why do you have to have grout in the first place? If the tiles are pushed up against each other with the sides touching and then put in grout in the very small area. why would a professional tile man insist that it MUST have grout?
- Because you dont ant water to be able to get underneath the tiles. However, if you push them close together you can caulk the seams with a similar color caulk.
- Q:i built a new shower, and plan on tiling up to the ceiling. if i tile the ceiling itself, someone told me this would be a chore to clean. any experience in this? the ceiling is cement board right now, what are my other options? BTW, the tile is 4x4 travertine.
- tile it to the ceiling of course, there is too much cleaning stuff on the market right now, for you to be worried about cleaning it. thats the best thing to do for it to look real nice.
- Q:Does anyone know if I can lay ciramic tile over the dull worn out linoleum floor in my kitchen? I don‘t want to peel up the linolium because of the insane amount of labor it will take, and make the sub floor un even. any suggestions? Will tiles still stick to this material? Thanks!
- You don't have to remove the old linoleum. But, you must prepare the surface for tiling. If the floor flexes at all, you could end up with cracked tiles or grout just by walking on the floor. You also need to put something down over the linoleum surface for the tile to stick to. First, you nail down a layer of hardy-backer. This is about a 1/4 to 3/8-inch cement-based wallboard. Next, you have to float about 1/4 inch of mastic on the hardy-backer to make a nice, flat surface (like pouring a cement floor). You then put about a 15-pound slipsheet on top of the wet mastic and let it set. The slipsheet allows minute movements of the subfloor due to thermal expansion without stressing the set tile. Once the mastic sets (usually overnight), you can begin setting the tile.
- Q:We recently renovated and trying to save money, we did the tile ourselves after some research. We used thinset, then backerboard, screwed the backer-board down (extra screws in high traffic areas) then thinsetted the tiles down according to instructions using a 1 inch trowel and grouted. Most of the rooms are fine (for now) but here‘s the problem:Through the main pathway, we started hearing what sounded like a sandy noise. Not good as the thinset is sandy. Today, I‘ve noticed that the grout along a few of the tiles is beginning to crack meaning the tiles must be flexing. The tiles are discontinued, have brand new cabinets on top of them and won‘t be easy to take out and replace. What should I do? Would putting large rugs over it help, with the intention of cushioning the footsteps?
- A couple possibilities, the use of such a large trowel wasn t needed. The thin set may not have been set up before foot traffic was on it,and the bond was broken, leading to loose tiles and thus grout cracking. The thinset may have been to thick or thin leading to not bonding or poor bonding. The grout may have been to watery and thus weak from to much water or to much water was used in washing the tile when grouting. What are you wanting to do? Repair the tiles?Regrout? To find out if the tiles are loose, get down and rap your knuckles on the tile with the cracked grout and then off to the side in a less used area. If the tiles you suspect are loose, there will be a hollow sound especially along the edge of the tile.It should sound firm on the other area. You don t need a handy man for this. - Q:Specifically, what type of drill bit is required that won‘t chip the tile.
- There isn't a manufacturer on the planet of tile or drill bits that will ever promise total success. Somewhere will be included a disclaimer stating the obvious (Operator at risk) I use tap con bits for small holes; but even then I like to have a box of extra tiles handy. Part of the issue however; is also the SIZE of the hole/opening; you intend. BTW and with all due respect to any who offer thsi as part of an answer...TAPE will not guarantee that the tile will not chip. Steven Wolf Thousands of sq. ft. of tile
- Q:What is the difference between good and bad tiles
- At present, there are many varieties of tiles on the market, there are more than a dozen categories, such as seepage through the whole body brick, glass turn, anti-skid tiles and the like, usually can be divided into the following. Glazed tiles: tiles on the surface of the brick. This brick is divided into two categories: one is made of clay, because of high water absorption and must burn glaze, so it should be called "tile", the strength of this brick is low, and now rarely used ; The other is fired with porcelain clay, in order to pursue the decorative effect also burned glaze, this tile structure is dense, high strength, low water absorption, strong stain resistance, the price is slightly higher than the ceramic firing tiles. Porcelain clay fired glazed tiles, is currently widely used in home decoration, 80% of the buyers are using this tile as a ground decoration materials. The trick of resolving these two bricks is simple: the clay is fired behind the clay, the clay is fired behind the brick. In the ceramic tiles made of clay, the Spanish production of wall tiles because of its unique decorative effect, is currently very popular in Beijing, but the price of this brick is higher, generally used in high-end home decoration. Quintana Brick: This is a glazed porcelain tile that has good skid resistance and abrasion resistance. Generally what we call "slippery tiles", most of the whole body bricks. Because this brick price is moderate, so by the consumer favorite. Which "seepage through the whole body brick," the beautiful pattern, it is put it down. Polished tiles: the whole body after the polished polished polished tiles, the hardness of this brick is very high, so very wearable.
