- You've gotten some good suggestions. I'll just add that I find the MOST important issue is to get ONE good straight, parallel line down the center of the longest run you can. Sometimes it behooves you to have the cenerline of the room run down the centerline of the center row of tile. For this, just measure over 1/2 a course and strike a line for your first edge. No matter what else you do, that ONE line should be your master and considered inviolate. Don't strike a line for each course. Just measure your gap with a spacer of some sort (you don't need to leave them in, just use a couple as a gauge). You're better off if you can do long rows at a time instead of aligning to another line set at 90 deg from the first; otherwise any deviation from a right angle will cause you grief. I find the tiles can be corrected as you go. Just start with that ONE line and build from there. Naturally the wider your grout line, the easier it is to lay out. I've put around 500 sqft of marble tile in my house with a 1/16 gap. That was considerably more tricky than using 1/4 gaps. Good luck!

- Q:I am planning on tiling the backsplash area of my kitchen. I am using 6x6 ceramic porecelin tile (roman stone). The dimensions of the area is 17x60. - You will be just fine installing your tile to the primed sheetrock. Mastic is great but, expensive. As for your grout joints, you should use either a 3/16 grout joint or a 1/4 grout joint, be sure to use sanded grout. As for your notch trowel, I would advise you to use a 1/4x1/4x1/4 notch trowel. - A 10x6 room requires 60 square feet of tile to cover the floor. On a normal square to the walls pattern, I would order 10% more tile to cover waste. On a diagonal pattern, you will have more waste. I would order 15% to 20% more tile to cover waste. To set up to lay the tile, I start by picking the most obvious sight line in the room - maybe from the next room through the door and chalk a line perpendicular to the far wall along that sight line and parallel to the side wall. Then you chalk a line 45 degrees wall to wall through the center point of the center of the first line. This is your 45 degree pattern. Chalking a line wall to wall 90 degrees from the second chalk line through that same center point gives you your grid pattern to set your tile from. Ignore the first line - that was for reference only - line two and three are the lines you set your tile from. Set out tile dry with spacers to see if you like the effect. I will sometimes set out all of the whole tile possible in the room and walk around to see if it looks good. If it doesn't look right or you end up with too small pieces along the edges or in the doorways, you can move your initial start point and rechalk your lines.
