- Q: I am learning about container gardening. I am growing herbs and veggies in my house. There is not enough light for some of the plants. My question is; is there a significant difference between a grow light and a regular fluorescent? What really is best for my plants?
- Nope. Any of the big box stores will have a full-spectrum fluorescent bulb, and that will do just fine. It's much cheaper, too, and can be placed in a standard light socket. If you can't find that, look for the fluorescent bulbs with color temperatures about 4,000 K (rather blue). The last choice would be a standard fluorescent with a color temperature around 2,700 K (the color of an incandescent bulb or a bit too red for most plants). A good grow light would probably be best, but it's certainly not necessary. The full-spectrum light will output enough for your plants in the regions of the spectrum that they like.

- UV = Ultraviolet light, which is radiation with wavelength shorter than visible light. Since UV wavelengths is shorter than visible -- the purple you describe is more like near-UV (400-200 nm). Have a look in Wikipedia, they have a good explanation.

- my tortoise has a compact UVB lamp (10% but weaker is probably ok). have a look at this website so you can avoid some dangerous products: www.uvguide .uk/ he also has a basking lamp - a ceramic dome fitting (exo terra) with a regular 60W reflector light bulb. don't bother with special basking bulbs - this is cheap and it works - it produces nice basking heat. i think that it is a good combination because the uvb light alone makes his environment look like a morgue. the incandescent bulb makes it look more natural (light temperature - wise). he also has a ceramic heat emitter for the night. exo terra make these and the fitting for them. they are quite expensive but are not supposed to break. the uvb light must be changed every 6 months. the reflector bulbs don't last very long so get a couple (they are really cheap).

I would say that the light received from a star is really old, but a photon is not actually effected by time. The photon travels at the speed of light, and so would not experience time or be effected by it. The light we receive from stars is very coherent because of the long distance involved, the photons are exceedingly parallel.
