I think you could have an excellent vacuum for around $300-$400. (Panasonic, Sanyo, Sharp) After seeing the Rainbow demonstrated, I just don't think they are worth the money. I also don't get how they clean the air. Basically, they are passing the dirty air over some water (not through it). and call this cleaning the air and filtering out the dirt. Check out some of the above vacuums online and save yourself some Christmas money. I just recently bought a Sanitaire SC6600 for our house and we really like it. Paid Approx. $325.00. It is commercial, 2 motor system, tools and stretch hose on board, carpet or hard floors (your can turn the beater brush off and just have air flow). Hope this helps.

I use a dirt devil and also carry a small wet/dry vac,both are 3 years old.I have found the more expensive brands are not always the answer as mileage may vary. I have found there is an inherent cost of doing business,vacuums being a wearable tool.It does sound as if your on the way high end of costs.There is generally 2 reasons for premature failure.The first is of course bad/inappropriate product,the second being an operator issue. Q: i need a good vacuum that won't break. my family and i had one that lasted for about 5-6 years then we kept buying vacuums for under $100 after that one broke then those broke within a month or two .. i need one that will last and won't be a waste of my money. one that is under $200 ... please help me...?? :-(: Depending where you live you can check discount stores that may have some good ones for less money. that's how I found mine- for $50. a couple of years ago. It's a Hoover and has a removeable cannister so you don't have to deal with messy paper filter bags. I can't recommend one brand over the other since I don't have that much experience. Just be sure you do the necessary maintenance once you buy one so that it doesn't become clogged with dirt and other debree. None of them will last forever but if you get 5-6 years that's not bad

I have a Filter Queen about 30 years old that just got its first repair. A new motor, $150 installed. I expect it to last another 25 years now because there's hardly anything else to break on it. That vacuum has vacuumed massive amounts of pet hair in the 25 years I've owned it, and anything else except water that would fit through the hose. I just helped a friend of mine buy the same model, $200 with a new motor, 2 year warranty on the motor, a year on everything else.
