- The metal frame that divides the tile into different sections is made from strips of metal carefully bent and soldered into place. I have seen steel ones and also brass mold patterns. The key to it is to have the bottom of the strips perfectly flat and level so that when you pour in the liquid cement mix, each color stays in its own compartment. - Q: I‘m going to install a porcelain tile floor. My question is when I install a tile up against a cabinet that people can see. Should I but the tile up against the cabinet or should I leave enough space to grout between the tile and the cabinet. Just wondering what the standard practice is , and what looks the best. Also I have a small crack in the concrete, which the tile company said it was so minor that not to worry about it. Although it caused a crack in my old tile that was originally installed. I would really like to prep the crack prior to installing the new tile. What would you recommend doing to prep the crack. Thanks
- If at all possible remove the cabinet and tile under it this way you will have a new clean and level floor otherwise you are leaving a quarter inch drop off at the least for water,bacteria and mold to grow. As for the crack if you have a circular saw buy an in-expensive carborundum blade or mmasonryfor it then grove out the crack and use a hand chisel wherever you can't reach or use a hammer and mmasonrygouging chisel for the whole crack,diamond wheels on grinders work well also if you have one,then wire wheel or wire brush out the grove and vvacuumit thoroughly then put silicone in it to just below level then using your thin set mix enough to apply a thin layer to each side of the crack and level out the crack then use fiberglass drywall tape and possibly a geo grid type netting or vvinylscreening, if the slab is older and somewhat settled this is the only way without busting out the slab which is probably only 3 inch thick,and pouring a new 6 bag per yard high strength concreteon a vvibratortamped ssubstrate withvapor barriers.

- I'm not at all familiar with tile making using rice hulls, but certainly I'm curious. I've installed multiple thousands of sq. ft. of tile; as well as having sculpted clay to fire in my kiln. You don't state that the glass will be in chip form, or has to be fired/melted. I profess some ignorance but it seems that in some way, the process would require a Forge or kiln, and when and how would the rice hull be infused,,,and more importantly how might one expect Rice Hull to stand up to the same temps as it would take to liquify glass? - tiles or bamboo flooring - carpet is dreadful with small children and pets (if you have them) they can crack if they are not installed right tho carpet is hard to clean- hard to keep the smells out- frequently adds to the allergen problems Especially with small children= if you feel you must have a rug make it small throw rugs that can be easily cleaned. you will sooooo glad you did, and no i DONT think they keep a room warmer. did you know that a new carpet offgasses formaldehyde!! all the more reason to avoid it as for tile - depending on where you are and how good your installers are will determine if its right for you. avoid the marble/granite type floors (unless you LIKE ER visits) its way to slick - personally i prefer the mexican type large floor tiles- very easy maintanence and here in this hot climate they are very cooling. they also crack if not installed correctly now if you are not sure of tile look into the newer laminate floors - especially bamboo. its beautiful, easy care, and bamboo is a Very GREEN product (rather than many rare and scarce hardwoods) even if its not the least expensive to install, in the long run i think its the easiest and least expensive to care for and live with. rj
- Q: i have just put down adhesive floor tiles in my bathroom, do i now need to use an extra sealant/pvc wash to seal the joins between the tiles as my kids enjoy splashing in the bath and i dont want the floor ( pvc sealed boards ) to lift if water gets in the gaps?

- No, I've never seen it and there's a scientific reason. You know the brown stuff between the tiles? And you know how things contract when it's cold right? So because the brown stuff and paint contact in different paces, the paint would crack and it would look really ugly (it would even look pretty bad before it cracks) Just replace the tiles with the colour you wanted.
