- Q: I laid a new porcelain tile floor in my bathroom. Old linoleum tile floor was in good shape so I just laid right over the top of it. All turned out well except around the toilet. Two of the tile cracked when I screwed the toilet back down to the floor. Obviously I‘ll have to pull the toilet again, remove cracked tiles and start over....but how to I avoid the cracks again?
- You should have done a better job from the start. Don't lay tile over vinyl period. How to maybe salvage your project without starting over. Remove the cracked tiles. Cut away the vinyl in the area lay the tile directly on the sub-floor and make sure you have adhesion. In addition to using notched trowel back butter the tile. Let it dry completely and grout. When you reinstall the toilet make sure you don't over tighten. This is not how I would tell you to lay tile, but your other choice is to rip everything up, including the vinyl and install a proper underlayment, like dura-rock and re-tile.
- Q: The existing ceramic tiles on the floor run up to the cabinets and appliances. Should I lay the floor first and then the cabinets or the cabinets first?
- In any new home construction ANY flooring is installed after and up to the cabinets set on the floor. It seems logical to assume WASTE in doing otherwise. What possible purpose might it serve to have material costing upwards of $2 per sq. ft. Under, and hidden by, cabinets?? The replacement cabinets should be installed first,,,BUT...the old flooring removed first would be the best strategy. - Whether tiles or cards, in Pai Gow, the Banker sets his hand last. There is only 1 exception. When a player chooses to be the Banker, and s/he chooses play against other players AND to also have money from the casino dealer play against him too, then the order is: Other players, the Banker, then the casino dealer. Now if YOU happen to be that Banker, you do NOT want to try peaking at what other players are doing with their tiles! They will think you are cheating. - Q: MyMy bathroom. which is about 75 square feet has a carpet and I want to change it to tile. The only utility is a toilet.How do I handle the toilet? - First remove the toilet. There is two screws holding it down, remove them. Then remove the toilet and the rug. What is underneath the carpet? If you have cement, you can tile over cement if its not damaged. If your have wood, you can install cement board using the cement screws that id made for this type of installation. Never use sheet rock screws. Use thin-set modified mortar to install floor tiles, do not use adhesive glue. I would recommend 8 x 8 tile but no bigger than 13 x 13 tile. Spread the thin-set onto the floor evenly using a spreader with 3/8 space. Spread an area enough to cover two or three tiles. Install two or three at a time and level them off, then continue the process. Let dry overnight and reinstall toilet, I would change the johnny ring and new screws.
- Q: I would like to know what steps to take to prepare the concrete floor for ceramic tile. Part of the floor is cement and part is painted. Do I have to prepare the painted portion before tiling?
- I tile every day of my life and since the paint is assumed to be part of some aesthetic over concrete, you can scuff it with a wire brush, belt sander, grinder, cleaning all debris. Beyond that, concrete, unless sealed, is a prime substrate for tile/mortar. Certainly you should check for level, as in depressions or any rise, then proceed as is standard Measure snap two perpendicular center lines adjust those lines for cuts and the least waste work from deep in to an exit point test level with a level or hand use a 1/4 in. toothed rectangular trowel to spread mortar use a poly based mortar use rubber spacers at 1/4 or 1/8 inch do not press aggressively save cuts and cut installs for last and do not attempt to kneel on tiles installed to add a piece missed perhaps remove cove base if it exists to replace later wait no less than 24 hours for dry/set time use Poly blend grout of you choice in color mix both mortar and grout to mashed potato consistency fill grout spaces after removing spacers use a rectangular rubberized spreader/squeegie wipe with a barely damp sponge first time then in 2 or 3 re-wipes as the grout sets you can increase dampness (grout sets faster than mortar) by the third wipe of grout excess you should be ok and notice upon drying a DUST that can easily be mopped away after the fact. allow 24 hrs for grout dry/set If you have a pedestal sink, pull it. Pull the toilet as well Tile to the sewage drain flange and replace with a new wax ring with a rubber flange extender embedded. Mop clean after two days and enjoy Steven Wolf Just my two sense
- Q: Is it possiable to stain or paint a ceramic tile floor. If so what are the steps I need to take to do it.We laid it about a year ago. My husband picked it out and it just does not look good next to the other tile he put in. - Your tile is most probably a glazed ceramic, meaning no paints would be able to penetrate to the biscuit. This means that all your paint would flake off over time. There is a glue on the market called Optima, and it is made by ABA Ardex. This glue comes in two parts, and it enables you to tile directly over tile. It isn't cheap though, so be weary when doing large areas. Other than that, most flexable glues would work if you remove 80% of the glaze, which means taking a grinder to the floor, which is hard and DIRTY work. If you were to do this, I would reccommend Abaflex.
- Q: Why the tile is not clean clean
- To the hardware store to buy a bottle of hydrochloric acid, industrial used those, more than two, even when cleaning is not careful to get the hands of no problem, and to ensure that your tiles bright as new.

- If the tile was laid properly, it can be time consuming. Yes, part of the cost of laying tile is in removing the old tile floor first. Never tile over tile. That's asking for trouble, plus it raises the floor height. I'd recommend getting a heavy steel mallet or hammer and renting an electric tile jack hammer. It plugs in and has a flat blade attachment that hammers away under the tile to lift it. While it may cost you money, it will save you time and muscle fatigue. Use the hammer to crack the tile before you use the electric tile hammer. It will go a lot faster.
- Q: all ceraminc tiles, mounted in between to tiles maybe?
- To do it properly, you will have to tear out a section of the shower wall which will allow you to properly install the shelf frame. It will probably end up being much larger that the shelf bracket because it needs to be securely fastened to a supporting member probably connected to wall studs at both ends. And once secured, the entire area refinished in tile. Unfortunately you will probably not be able to match the existing tile, so you may have to re-tile the entire wall or even the entire shower, depending upon how important the finished appearance is to you. As you can see, this project may approach or exceed the effort required to completely redo the entire shower. So my recommendation is to put a shelf pole in the corner or use a hanging basket of some sort to hang from the shower arm. It is really up to you. Good Luck.
