Keep doing it, they get the message eventually. We wake up without kids in the bed now, yipppeee. It worked for us! The Brittish nanny on TV taught a mom how to do it, I tried it and it worked. It takes consistancy, so even when you want to sleep get up and move them. Remember, not one word, no hugs, no kisses, no tucking in. Just take them from your bed and put them in theirs. We also put up baby gates at their doorway to keep them in their rooms, although your 4 year old is probably going to just climb over huh? For an older child, you have to set up a reward system. For every night he stays in bed he gets X amount of money to be spent at Toys R Us, or to buy a slurpee from 7-11, whatever you think might work. Bribery works!! A transition from his crib straight to a twin bed would not work with him at all. I got the bed rail and decided to put his mattress on the floor and use the rail since he doesn't have a mattress and box spring yet. (I took the drop side off the crib and left the other 3 sides up around the mattress.) He loves his bed (again, a slow transition), and the rail keeps him from falling onto the floor. We are getting him a twin bed in a couple months, but this was a good solution in the meantime so he wasn't climbing out of his crib. He doesn't even get out of bed at night. Good luck!

Q: when would you put your baby into a toddler bed?: my son is 23 months- he is a good sleeper in his crib- I think I wont put him in a toddler bed until maybe about 2 and a half. My older son was a HORRIBLE sleeper and hated his crib- he went into a bed at 16 months (not a toddler bed) a twin mattress on the floor. I say if they are sleeping well and not making a fuss leave them in the crib.

Some dogs prefer to sleep in a crate than on a bed or in an large open space. If he does not chew or eat anything, then he should be fine out of crate and lay in bed with you. I personally would not let him wander the whole house, maybe limit his wandering to one room. It's really up to you.
