- Q: The previous owner placed VCT tiles on beautiful hardwood floors. I want to remove them, without messing up the wood too bad, since I want to sand and wax the floors after I remove them.Is there a way to do this without ruining the floors? Can I rent a machine? Should I try to heat up the tiles? They are glued on very well, and its a large area. The machines I have seen so far, look like they are made to remove tiles that are placed on concrete. Thanks in advanced

- Q: I have a purple tub and purple tile through out the bathroom ,how do I change the color ,is there paint I can buy
- You need to know if your tiles are glazed or not. Then visit any craft store and ask for ceramic paint, but remember to check if it's for glazed or unglazed tiles.
- Q: I recently got some ceramic tile for free that the construction company was just going to throw away. How do I tell if they are wall or floor tile? I think it has something to do with the way the back of the tile looks, but I'm not sure.
- Wall tile is on the wall and floor tile is on the floor. Seriously, there's no real difference. Although, floor tiles are generally bigger (12+ inches square), while wall and counter tiles are more like 4-6 inches square.
- Q: We‘re renovating an old house, and the ceramic tile on the bathroom walls is just awful. I‘d like to replace the wall tile with beadboard. The tiles appear to be mortared directly onto the drywall. Is it a good idea to install the beadboard directly over the ceramic tile? Or should we chip of the tile or remove the lower portion of the drywall? I‘d like to do this as easily as possible, but not at the risk of shoddy workmanship. Also - all the beadboards I‘ve looked at are either painted or primed on the front surface, with a bare wood surface on the rear (glued to the wall). Is it advisable to paint/prime the rear surface as well before installation? With all the steam and moisture in a bathroom, I can envision the panels buckling. Is there a particular paint/primer that seals off from moisture particularly well?
- It's better to remove the tile altogether, including the old backer board. We did that as insurance, we found there was no insulation in the wall so it was good that we did. Cover the entire wall with sheetrock (green board, meant for a wet location) then glue the beadboard in place with water proof adhesive (applied with a caulk gun). It's worth the extra time and effort for your own house and you'll know it's done correctly and will last for many years to come. Good luck, been there done that and still in the process. It's a labor of love, I guess! :o)
- Q: In order to be able to tile the windows (instead of the white moulding) like in the second kitchen, what steps would I have to take? Just remove the moulding on the inside then tile?
- Yes, carefully remove the moldings before tiling. Using a utility knife, cut the caulking between the molding and the wall first so you can pry them off with a prybar or small putty knife. In the picture, it looks like they also tiled inside the window frame as well. I would consider this carefully, as those windows are probably designed to be removed from the inside and tiling there could prevent you from replacing them in the future.
- Q: hi friends.. we r constructing a new house.. many people say us lay tiles for floorins and many say to use marbles or granite?...so confused!!!!.. wat to do?quite big house situated quite beneath the hills.
- tiles much cheaper than marble/granite
- Q: Do you have to rough up the old flooring ?
- Maybe. If the old vinyl tile is flat, then yes. If it is dimensional (has any type of raised surface), then you would have to use a flooring patching compound to level it (a lot of work). Also, you have to make sure the old vinyl tile is clean. Glue will not stick to a dirty surface. I would think it would be easier to get thin plywood, nail it down and put the vinyl tile on that.......
- Q: I have 12x12 tiles in my kitchen on the floor and about 5 of them are cracked/damaged. How hard is it to replace them, can I do it myslef or hire a professional? What materials will be needed?
- It's not difficult but it takes some strength and patience. You'll have to break off the damaged tiles and chip the mortar (cement like stuff) until it is flat and even. You can use a chisel for this since it's a small surface. Take out the grout around the tile as well. Then you'll need some mortar, the replacement tile, and grout (color need to match existing grout). Place the prepared mortar on the square using a trowel and lay the tile on it - make sure the tile is even with the existing flooring. If it sinks too low, add mortar, if it pops up too high, take out excess mortar. Then wait 24 hours and then apply the prepared grout over the tile using a rubber float. Scrub clean with wet sponge - might take several times to get the grout film off the tile surface. Wait another 24 hours for the grout to set before walking on it. All done.
- Q: How easy is it to tile a kitchen floor. Plus would you lay the tiles directly onto the concrete sub floor or lay concrete boards or chipboards underneath. I would also like to continue this to the hallway and under stairs. Thanks.
- I have never tiled a floor but i have done a backsplash and it should be about the same. It was not very difficult and kinda fun. You will need something to cut tile with or you will waste a lot of tile.I have found that you can find how to do anything by doing a search on the internet--this is what I suggest you do. Now just my opinion--I would not want a tile floor in my kitchen because they are hard on your legs and back if you stand on them a lot and any thing breakable dropped on them will not stand a chance also they will crack if heavy object is dropped. There are many alternatives to tile, laminate that looks like tile or wood would be a good choice or hardwood.
- Q: I want to install vinyl over a tile floor. What procedures should I take? What adhesive? What prep on the ceramic?
- You should definitely remove the tile as well as the underlayment for the tile. Screw down the subfloor to the floor joist so that the new floor doesn't squeak. Install vinyl underlayment, crack fill the joints and install your vinyl flooring. Be sure to pay attention to your threshold where the new floor meets the old floor at the door openings.
