- Start doing the largest area and do a 1/2 tile on the out side wall. All interior walls are supposed to be layed out to the out side and be square. Now if you have a long visible hall way near by, you may want to split that to get a good look at it from there. Its hard to positively say with out seeing it. I could visualize it then. Since this is a diagonal you cant control to much where the tiles land. If it were a straight lay, you d have a bit more control as to the layout. - Q: I have some ceramic tiles in my kitchen floor that I would like to paint. Would this be possible?
- If you go to the DIY store I would think you would get paint especially for the job. When you have a smooth surface to get paint or varnish to stick to it you need to give it a key (ie use sand paper to give it something to grip) This wouldnt work here as it would damage your tiles. Another thought is you get these transfers which are just squares a different colour that you can put on tiles maybe that would be worth a go.
- Q: Want to put ceramic tile floor down in bathroom. It has a lanolium floor now. What is the best way to prep, in order to have a good tile job.
- if you have wood sub floor, and is at least one and half inch thick, i would leave lanolium down buy quarter inch ply wood. screw it to floor and get bucket of mastik and install ceramic tile....I've tried it and works great has been down for 5 years and no problems yet. it was in bathroom and kitchen
- Q: I have this ceramic tile in my bathroom (on the wall, not the floor). There is absolutely nothing wrong with it, except it is an incredibly ugly color. I would like to paint it, rather than rip it all down just to put up more tile. Any suggestions?
- Can you successfully paint ceramic tile with a conventional latex paint? No. It is too hard and too slick. Is the tile subject to direct contact with water? Is the bathroom vented well or is there a lot of humidity during showers? Where there is moisture or high humidity you will especially need to do it right or it will not last, it will blister and eventually those blisters will break and flake off. I would have it done professionally if I were you. Do a search for a competent bathtub re-finisher. The same process should work for the the ceramic tile. If memory serves me correctly it will involve cleaning, acid etching, re-cleaning, priming with a two part epoxy, and finishing with a two part urethane - or something similar to this procedure. Although not a one step process, it still should be cheaper than tearing out the old tile and re-installing new. Be sure the re-finisher offers a warranty on his work - I have seen professionally refinished tubs blister and peel particularly where water collects or where soaps and shampoos are left on the surface for extended lengths of time. One note about the two part expoxies and urethanes - they stink very badly. You will want to be able to open windows and ventilate the house well if they are used.

- Q: I just grouted the ceramic tiles I laid in my kitchen. The grout was supposed to be a dark maroon color, but it turned out a whitish powdery color (efflorescence). What is the main cause of this...it can't be water coming from underneath the tiles because the basement is underneath the kitchen floor...unless it came from the mortar under the kitchen tiles. How do I get rid of the efflorescence. Grout cleaner didn't work...should I use salfamic (spelling?) acid and scrub the grout lines? Can J just refloat new grout over the existing grout? HELP...I need to put my base cabinets in, but I can't stand looking at my floor the way it is.
- You have a larger problem than you think, that is if your basement floor is of solid construction. If so you have damp in the floor, and sorry to be the barer of bad news but it wont go away. You need a d.p.m. in sub floor prior to tiles is the only way. Jeff
- Q: We currently have vinly tile in our tiny kitchen. We want to upgrade but want something that looks nice and is easy to install. What would you recommend (not wood)? Also, would we have to take up the vinyl floor tiles or install on top of it?
- Doc is right as usual-stop that Doc! :) I have installed a lot of Bamboo lately-I really like it. However, you said not wood-not sure if that includes laminates. When I approach an installation with existing vinyl, my first question is what is the vinyl adhered to? If it is on particleboard or plywood, I remove the vinyl and the substrate. If it is adhered to concrete or floor boards, I prefer to add bracing from underneath and screw the boards (through the vinyl) into the joists/braces to make the floor ridgid. Ceramic, Porcelain, Slate, Terra Cotta are all options other than wood, but require more skill (sounds like you will be installing) than laminates or floating hardwood.
