- Q: hello! if i have a connected dining room/kitchen and the kitchen has ceramic tile (that is old) and the dining room has carpet, can i just rip up the carpet and install vinyl tile over the ceramic then over the sub-floor without any issues?
- Yes, Vinyl can be installed over the top of vinyl. If it is sheet vinyl inspect for loose areas and cut a seam and reglue it down. If it is square (or similiar) tiles inspect each piece and if loose re-glue. There is no problem with laying over top of the old floor. I have renovated numerous homes and for mediocre money you can make a old floor look nice.
- Q: Does anyone know where I can find a blue and white checkered floor tile for my bathroom? Some places carry the black/white but nothing else. - Q: I want to add a backsplash with a 4x4 ceramic tile. I only want to go up 1 or 2 tiles in height not the whole wall area. Edges of the tiles are not black for the unfinished ceramic. How do I make the edges look finished or black also?
- Most tile patterns have edge pieces just for this purpose. When you go shopping for your tile, check to see if there are matching edge pieces in the same color. Edge pieces are narrow, beveled or rounded off in some way so you can just butter them in along the last row of tiles and give it a finished look. Talk to the shop folks and see what they've got for you.

- Q: I‘m trying to re-tile two small bathrooms. One is ~20 sf. The other is ~35 sf. I already have the tile, don‘t want any special designs, and have normal rectangular shaped bathrooms with a toilet on one wall (i.e. very few weird cuts). There is already tile on the floors that will have to be taken up. How much should I expect to pay to get someone to install it?
- I don't know where your from and prices varies Tilers charge per square yard. find out with your measurements what the square yard is. be it.. 20 , 25 i don't know. then ring a tiler and ask him how much they charge per square yard. multiply their answer with your answer. that's your price. in Ireland it's 15 per s yard so...... (10 sy X 15 = 150) remember when measuring that you subtract the windows and doors as tilers should not include this in price. also count your bags of adhesive as tilers steal the left over stuff thats not needed. I know this because I am one.
- Q: We have small ceramic tiles on our bathroom floor. They are varied in shape and size (see photo).I think that these tiles originally came with some sort of netting on the back when they laid the floor and they added grout? I believe I saw some extra tiling somewhere in our home and this is what I had found.Anyway, the grout is breaking up between some of the tiles and some of the tiles keep popping out. I have two questions, If I regrout them do I put it on the bottom of the tile too and does that make the tile adhere to the floor?How would I get the grout to match what‘s already there, it‘s a medium brown gray. Not sure if it started out that way or became like that over the years. Would it look funny if the grout didn‘t match? How could I get it to match?
- The plastic mesh was there to make it easy to set a lot of small tiles as it they were one big tile. If a tile is loose, you have to chip out all the old adhesive on the floor and on the back of the tile (or use a replacement tile if you have some) and use fresh adhesive. This is not the same as grout. The two common tile adhesives are called mastic and thinset. For small repairs, I'd go with the mastic. You do the best you can to match the color. You can get a color palette at any home store, bring it home and pick the closest match. You should probably try to clean some of the grout as best you can with bathroom cleaners and bleach to see what the original color was.
- Q: we are constructing apartment....got a question about tile work..which is better, is it better to leave some gaps between tiles and is it better layout tiles with no gaps between them...the builder is suggesting the first option above...i prefer the second option...because with the first option, i feel there are chances of dirt getting clogged as time passess by...please advise
- The TYPE, size and style of tile determines the size of gap and the type of grout used. Sanded or unsanded. A general rule of thumb, and this is a general rule, 4x4 and most white (white not off white/tan) bodied tile takes almost no gap and tiles are self spacing and use an unsanded grout. Any thing larger and has a red/ tan /grayish or darker body takes a sanded grout and a space as small as 1/8 and no smaller and up to 1/2 grout size. Sealing all grout properly ( easy job) will help a lot in the staining of the grout. There is no choice , the proper gap and type of grout must be used or the grout can fail.
