- Q:i going to tile my whole house both floors bath room and all with the same tile it is a 20x20 tile diagonally where should i start and does it really matter where ?
- Start doing the largest area and do a 1/2 tile on the out side wall. All interior walls are supposed to be layed out to the out side and be square. Now if you have a long visible hall way near by, you may want to split that to get a good look at it from there. Its hard to positively say with out seeing it. I could visualize it then. Since this is a diagonal you cant control to much where the tiles land. If it were a straight lay, you d have a bit more control as to the layout. - I will have to assume you are talking about vinyl tile?? I can't imagine laying carpet over ceramic tiles!!! If your old carpet was wall-to-wall, all you need to do is untangle the old carpet from the needle-like protrusions located next to each wall. You can then lay new wall-to-wall carpet over the old tiles and connect it to the protrusions just like the old carpet was. If you are opting for an area rug, you will need to remove the old tacked-down carpet holders around the perimeter and repair or replace the vinyl tiles that now have holes in them.

- Q:Well I grouted my glass tile backsplash today and let it dry, now it is ready to be cleaned off, but i am completely exhausted! can i clean it off tomorrow or will it be too late? grout container said to let it dry for 4 hrs before cleaning off with a dry cloth. yeah right, a dry cloth does not do the trick. only a damp linen cloth used to scrub each individual little tile gets the haze and bits of left over grout off and that is going to literally take me all night. so can i do that tomorrow or do i need to pull an all nighter???
- I know you're tired but you'll be glad you did it tonight. Once grout dries out it is harder than h#ll. You'll be scraping grout till the cows come home and worrying about scratching your tile the whole time. Use some white vinegar to damp you cloth. It will help loosen the grout and clean the tile nicely while you're at it.
- Q:why is waterproofing done before grouting?why do we need to let the mortar/adhesive dry before grouting?
- You should use special green board for the shower. It is water resistant not water proof. This gives the best base for the tiles. You should leave the adhesive set up totally before grouting because the gases that are in the glue need a place to go. This includes thin set mortar because of the water vapor it out gases. - I don't know where everyone gets your info, you can put tile over linoleum but you must first rough up the surface for tile cement to adhere. Most manufacturers recommend 1 1/4 of sub floor so floor won't flex to much and crack the grout.

- DO NOT buy overpriced ceramic tile at a huge chain store. Find a discount builder warehouse of some kind that carries flooring supplies. We recently put new 12x12 tile throughout our entire house and paid only 68cents per tile! We got rid of all the carpet, it is so nasty! You wouldn't believe the germs, mold, dirt, sand, bugs, etc., that get trapped underneath, no matter how much you vacuum. The labor price depends on the worker. Ask around, find a friend who knows someone who lays tile. We had a friend lay ours for about $1.00 per square foot.

- Ceramic tile. It will take the traffic better, wood is prone to water damage Tile cleans much easier than wood and will take moppings where wood you should never mop( water can damage it). Grout, when you seal it,cleans easy. Wood looks great other places and add value to a house ( ceramic does to) but not in a high traffic water prone area such as the kitchen. Much more maintenance than ceramic. Wood will cost a bit less butt ceramic will installed properly will last a life time with out having to be refinished.. - Q:We‘re renovating an old house, and the ceramic tile on the bathroom walls is just awful. I‘d like to replace the wall tile with beadboard. The tiles appear to be mortared directly onto the drywall. Is it a good idea to install the beadboard directly over the ceramic tile? Or should we chip of the tile or remove the lower portion of the drywall? I‘d like to do this as easily as possible, but not at the risk of shoddy workmanship.Also - all the beadboards I‘ve looked at are either painted or primed on the front surface, with a bare wood surface on the rear (glued to the wall). Is it advisable to paint/prime the rear surface as well before installation? With all the steam and moisture in a bathroom, I can envision the panels buckling. Is there a particular paint/primer that seals off from moisture particularly well?
