- You can apply plaster to tiles but as they are non-absorbant you have to use a neat bonding agent first. Then apply the plaster when the agent is still tacky. Alternatively you can apply a slurry of 2 parts sharp sand and 1 part cement, mixed with 1 part bonding agent to 1 part water. Apply this with a stiff brush to give a stippled coating. When dry plaster over. Though I havent tried it I should think that using a builders adhesive you can stick plasterboard to tiles or why not tile over with new tiles. I did that in my bathroom with no problems.-just make sure tiles are cleaned of grease then tile in usual way. Hope this helps
- Q: Do I start in the middle like normal tile? What happens if I don‘t start in the middle due to the uneven wall?
- Personally I would dtart in the middle just like you asked. Are you planning to lay the tile on wood subfloor or conrete? Wood is by far the best way to go as the glue will stick better. If its wood then make sure all is clean and dry the use a laytex primer on the wood and let dry. This step is a must as its the primer that will activate the glue and not allow the tile to pop off after install. If its concrete then again make sure you sweep then clean the floor with TSP( very strong chemical wear gloves) this will get all the junk that maybe on the concrete ie oil, dirt, paint, wax you name it. alolow to dry then install the tiles. If onto vinyl then use the TSP again and then put an embosser levelor on top of the existing vinyl floor as this will create a smooth floor and not allow your old vinyl pattern to show through you new tiles. the final step I like to use is a rolling pin over the tiles to make sure the glue is biting into the floor well.
- Q: I have a small round accent table with formica top. I‘d like to try my hand at mosaic tiling on the top. Is it possible to do this over the formica, or do I have to remove it. If so, what do I use to prep the formica before tiling. p.s. I‘ve never tiled anything before. Using this as a learning project.Thanks for any suggestions, tips.
- technically, tile isn't made to stick directly over formica. a form of underlayment is required, especially if trying to tile over a formica countertop. since this is just a table, and you are using small mosaic type tiles, the best thing for you to do is sand the finish off of the formica. a belt sander would be the easiest and best way, but if you don't have one or are afraid of powertools, some heavy grit sandpaper would do the trick, and LOTS of elbow grease. you're looking to take the finish and top layer off. use a white thinset, preferably a multiflex (available at home depot or lowes), to set your tiles with, as it is a better product than mastic, and if any of your mosaic tiles are made of glass, mastic won't even stick to them. then, wait for it to dry (24 hours) and grout with the color of your choice. good luck!
