- Q: my husband put in tile in the motel i work at and it is ceramic tile and some of the rooms are popping up up can you tell me why? by the way could it be the climate i live in florida!
- Could be the humidity. What did he use to stick them down? Did he use a mastic that comes already mixed in a tub? If so, there will probably always be problems in a humid or wet areas. Thinset is best for tile.
- Q: How can you cover ugly wall tiles??
- just tear them off and out up some wall paper, if you cannot do that for whatever reason jst put some your fav posters on the wall to cover them up
- Q: CAN YOU LAY TILE OVER TILE
- If your existing tile is tight to the floor and in good shape (no cracks, loose tile, loose grout) yes you can. You need to use a thin set with a very high latex content like TEC Superflex. Be sure that the existing tile and grout is perfectly clean and there are no sealers left on the grout. This is an industry accepted method.
- Q: I am looking at removing the existing wooden fire place surround (not a mantel, but some decorative wood surrounding the fireplace), and the 70‘s fireplace hearth, and replacing each with some nice slate tiles. The slate would be attached to the wall, and to the floor. Is there anything I should know when attaching (slate) tiles to a wall? Do I need to remove any paint, or can I get an adhesive that will bond (PL Premium or regular mortar mix?). How close should the grout lines be with slate? I know with marble you want them close, and with ceramic you can have some space. How do you ensure the tiles don‘t slip when attached to a vertical wall. Sorry for the questions, but I do appreciate any suggestions and answers!
- Only loose paint needs to be removed. If your paint has no chips or bubbles there's no reason to try taking it off. Your grout lines can be from 1/8 to 1/4' depending on your preference. Use a premixed ceramic wall adhesive such as Pro-Lastic, Pro-Flex, or Pro-Mastic Thinset. To keep tiles from slipping, simply start at the floor and work up, applying spacers between the tiles as you work. The adhesive will keep the tiles from falling off the wall, and the spacers and tiles below will keep them from sliding down. Some tiles come with built in plastic spacers for wall installation. It is possible for the tiles to sag a little so check with a level from time to time.
- Q: We had glass tile installed in our kitchen and it looks wavy. Our installer said it was an optical illusion which I disagree with. I noticed it as it was being installed and that he did not use spacers. Wouldn‘t that have allowed the tiles to move before they were grouted?
- To check his claim of optical illusion, take a level (or anything that is a few feet long and perfectly straight) and put it against your tile. Then check if the level touches the tile on all its length (ignore the air bubble). After checking one area, move left-right as needed, try a slight diagonal, vertical if you have enough room, to make sure you 'cover' the most surface of your backsplash tile, and if the level touches the tile everywhere, with no gaps here and there, then your tile are ok, not wavy. If there are gaps between your level and the tile, this shows that the tile ARE wavy. If he used the same thickness of adhesive everywhere, and if the tile prove to be wavy (after you test it as stated above), then the end result is that the wall was wavy in the first place and the tile are just following the wall. The installer should've told you about this at the very beginning... a good one should've notice that with the naked eye, or just check it with a level, and have the wall leveled before tiling. If the gaps between the tile (grout lines) are even everywhere, then at least that part of the job is done ok. Wider and narrower grout lines are the result of not using spacers, but, depending on the kind of tile used, in very rare cases, it could be from the manufacturer, as in, tiny tile squares/pieces placed on a mesh and not perfectly aligned, will result in uneven grout lines. Also, the tile adhesive is supposed to be dry (usually dries overnight) BEFORE the grouting starts. So, there shouldn't be any tile moving around while grouting. After grout has cured (usually 3 days), sealer MUST be applied to grout lines and some types of tile (not all). Good luck !
- Q: I absolutely hate the tile in our main bath, its coming up and in a few places there is no grout, so its basically looks awful. The bathroom is my dogs fav place to be and i am constantly sweeping the gobs of hair that get in the cracks. Are there any suggestions for an eay fix? How much trouble would it be to just fill the cracks with grout and put stick tile over it? Would that be a ridiculous idea?
- YOUR IDEA IS BRILLIANT AND RELATIVELY INEXPENSIVE
- Q: Tile maintenance
- Tiles daily maintenance cleaning skills: 1, such as the brick surface appears a slight scratches, can be painted in the scratches on the toothpaste, with a soft dry cloth can be wiped hard to repair. If the damage is serious should be replaced or ask professionals to repair, so as not to cause harm to the person. 2, polished tiles should be regularly waxing treatment, 2-3 months is appropriate. The gap between the brick and the brick can be cleaned with the detergent from time to time, and then brush with a brush in the gap layer of waterproofing agent, can mold growth. 3, tiles daily cleaning optional detergent, soap and so on. With soap and add a little mixture of ammonia and turpentine cleaning tiles, tiles can be more clean and translucent. 4, tea, coffee, beer, ice cream, grease and other pollutants attached to the surface of the tile should be promptly scrub, if necessary, can be used sodium hydroxide or potassium bicarbonate solution decontamination. Ink, cement and other pollutants can use hydrochloric acid, nitric acid dilution solution, and paint, paint and other pollutants is best to use special cleaning agent.
- Q: My fireplace is non-working and it is made of ugly red tile that looks dirty and has pen marks on it from previous owner's kids. I want to paint it to update the look. What would Fleck Stone paint look like?
- Why not buy a similiar tile from Home Depot or Lowes and do a test. If you like the results then do the fireplace. Much easier this way and if you do not like it no great loss of time and money
- Q: What are the advantages of Marco Polo Tiles? How to choose the tiles?
- You can go to CityTogo to see the above Marco Polo tiles it From the appearance point of view, the color should be uniform, surface finish and flatness is better, the other can be identified by the sound, with a hard light flick, the sound more crisp, the higher the degree of porcelain, the better quality. Or can use water droplets in the back of the tile, see the water spread after the infiltration of the speed, the slower the water, indicating that the greater the density of the tile, on the contrary, that the density of sparse, its inherent quality than the former is excellent. In addition, from its hardness point of view, with the tile pieces of the edges and corners scratched each other to see broken fragments broken, if it is fine, hard, or leave scratches rather than loose, soft, or left scattered powder, It is good quality. These are common sense
