Q: I have taken three phrases from the article, “Why Bother?” and have asked people why this would motivate them into planting a garden. Planting the garden would help with the climate change and in other words going green.Your input would be greatly appreciated“…A great many things happen when you plant a vegetable garden, some of them directly related to climate change, others indirect but related nevertheless.”“…planting a garden sounds pretty benign, I know, but in fact it’s one of the most powerful things an individual can do- - to reduce your carbon footprint…”“Well, you will probably notice that you’re getting a pretty good workout there in your garden, burning calories without having to get into the care to drive to the gym.”All quotes from quot; Why Botherquot; by Michael Pollan
The most important and logical reason to grow a home garden is it is 100% toxic chemical free, unless you apply them yourself. The second reason is the food has a much better flavor and texture when allowed to vine ripen instead of being subjected to gases to make them ripen. Third is for your health. Home grown veggies reduce cancer and central nervous system damage and other illnesses associated with the chemicals used in the production, storage and preparation of commercial foods. Trying to stop global warming would be the worst reason for trying to grow a garden. It is a misconception that plants will stop green house warming. During the day, plants absorb carbon dioxide, and give off oxygen, at night they reverse the process and take in oxygen and give off carbon dioxide. Simple plants like algae are the exception, giving off more oxygen during the day than carbon dioxide at night. Actually, according to my college classes in chemistry that pertain to the environment, Plants encourage global warming by giving off fluorocarbons through their leaves, a major green house gas. The forest and plant life of the planet are the second greatest contributor to green house gases. Global warming and the wet rainy climate associated with it is good for plants, so by nature, plants try to create an environment best for them. During planetary warming cycles, thousands of new plant species evolve and then die out when the next ice age occurs. Someone must have read only what they wanted from the scientific research on this subject, not the whole study.
Q: Hi. We just sold our house and are moving to a rental townhome. Had the carpets professionally cleaned, but there is still a smell of pet odor in one of the bedroom closets which appears to be where the previous tenants kept not only the dog food, but the litter box as well. Any recommendations on some additional action that can be taken to reduce the slight stinch still left behind? Air puifier? Thanks
my house when i moved in stink and it took me 4 week to get rid of dag mess and the smell i used bleach, dettol all sorts and the only thing that worked was a bottle of pure ammonia it stinks but i went out for a few hours and when i came back i cleaned up and it has totally gone now,i uggest you try ammonia, beware tho it stinks lol
Q: I'm planting a garden in a few weeks and i need some help. What are any tips you guys might have?
Keep soil moist and loose...if you have a choice of locations, morning sun is better than the hot afternoon/evening sun. Most vegetables do best in a sandy loam soil...if you have a heavy clay soil, then you can lighten it by adding perlite or even some sand. If you have a very sandy soil with not much topsoil, then you can help retain moisture by adding some peat moss. You can also use a cheap mulch (pine bark mulch) to retain moisture and keep roots cool from the hot afternoon sun. It's also a good idea to pick up a pH test kit from local home and garden center to check the pH of your soil. If the soil is too acidic, then your plants won't be able to access any nutrients from the soil. Adding lime will raise the pH to a good level of 5.5 - 7 if it's low.
Q: Hi, I have a copy of the Better Homes and Gardens Bread Cookbook from 1963. In there is a recipe for Hopping Bunny Bread. The picture with the recipe shows two versions of the finished bread: one has the bunnies shaped in a curlicue type of fashion, with a head, body, tail and ears. The other version is simpler, just a twist of bread that resembles a bunny from the back, with a tail at the bottom. I have the cookbook but we moved and a lot of my books are in storage, and I won't be able to look for this book until after Easter. This bread is a tradition in my house...I bake enough for my family and for my parents too. I do remember that there is orange juice in the bread dough. If anyone has this recipe or cookbook and can give me the recipe I will really appreciate it!
I have a Hopping Bunnies recipe scribbled on a recipe card. It is identical to the Orange Rosettes recipe. I've always used butter instead of shortening. The bunnies are shaped as directed in the link to the bread machine recipe. While still warm, they are frosted with a sugar glaze (see below). Mix ? cup hot water, 1 t butter and 2 cups sifted confectioner’s sugar. Mix until well blended.
