Q: I cannot see that a electrode would be useful in a generator, is there a way?
According to Wikipedia: An electrode is an electrical conductor used to make contact with a nonmetallic part of a circuit (e.g. a semiconductor, an electrolyte or a vacuum). There is an example of an electrode used in generators, and all industrial/commercial electrical systems. It is called a grounding electrode. It is a metallic rod that is driven deep in to the dirt, to establish a contact with the background Earth voltage. Is the dirt a nonmetallic part of the circuit? Well, dirt often does contain metals in it, but it isn't dominantly metal, so it still is considered non-metallic. And we normally hope that the dirt isn't part of the circuit, but there is a chance that it can become part of the circuit, and that is generally why grounding electrodes are installed. The grounding electrode doesn't really play an active role in the operation of any of the electrical equipment. It is more of a safety feature, as a JUST IN CASE the insulation on the live wire fails. Suppose the live wire insulation fails, and the live wire contacts the metal structure of a device (that isn't intended to play an electrical role), and you as a human victim touch that metal structure. You are also standing on the ground, and the natural path of electric current from the metal structure to the ground is through your body. Unless of course, a better path is established in advance. And that is what a grounding electrode, and the rest of the grounding system does. It establishes electrical continuity with all metals that aren't intended to be electrically involved, so that any failure of the live wire will trip the circuit breaker before there is a chance that the human gets injured.
Q: Garbage disposal is wired into open electrical outlet down thru basement. Dryer is not vented outside, which is in the basement also, right next to this outlet. There is excessive lint from the dryer all over this open outlet that doesnt have a cover and the live electrical big thick white wire that you wire a house with is split down the middle then the raw metal part is inserted into each side of the outlet for the garbage disposal. If I pull this out to disconnect it will it spark? Shock me? Catch on fire? I want to do this because I am afraid it is going to catch on fire from all the lint. Is that possible also?I rent and I know the dryer should be vented, however it is all glass block windows and landlord has yet to fix it so please dont tell me to vent the dryer. thanks
vent the dryer.important.
Q: Downstairs 4 outlets and 4 of the lights stopped working. One of the outlets that doesn't work has the top plugin socket working but the bottom one doesn't. Also 2 lights still work even though they are in rooms where the sockets don't work. At the time we did have two computers running from the outlets and maybe some other electrical stuff. When the electrical went out we heard electrical sparking sounds. Then like a couple months later it happened again but upstairs. The lights and outlets stopped working in 2 bedrooms and the bathroom. I don't think we had very much electrical equipment plugged in just maybe a hair straightener. If I reset the breaker the switch will move to where its supposed to be but nothing happens. How much money should I have on hand for the electrician approximately? $200? $1000?
sounds like you have a problem with your outlet.wires are fed from the source Breaker Boxto a junction box where it branches offyoull have an outlet that should have 4 or more wires connectedthis is because the wiring goes into the outlet on one side and out on the other to feed another recepticle, light, switch etcif half of your outlet is not working, the contact plate inside brokeit may arc and start a fire. because the plate is broken, there is no output to the other devices connected.replace that outlet and check any nearby junction boxesmake sure wire caps are tight. to replace an outlet will costs you around 80 bucks for an electrician, or about 23 cents to do it yourself if you learn about wiring.
Q: For instance, could you use normal 14/2 building wire normally used in houses for 115 volt AC lights and outlets and run DC through it provided that the voltage and current does not exceed 120 volts and 15 amps?Could you use normal in-wall light switches in the same way as long as the DC volts and amps does not exceed the AC rating?
gadget OF A DOWN!!! FOR EVER! gadget of a Down honestly has the skill to imagine! AC/DC purely flow round with their australian fool making a music about balls and explosives. gadget of a Down is an quite complicated band. in case you probably did not understand, all 4 contributors are of Armenian descent, grandsons of Armenian Genocide survivors, and are widely prevalent for his or her outspoken perspectives expressed in many of their songs. gadget is gifted, and in case you doubt this for one second hear to: BYOB, understand, question!, Suite-Pee, Chop Suey!, and many different songs. it is Serj Tankian's call written in Armenian: ?? ????. relish SOAD, relish existence. ROCK ON!
Q: EMP is a byproduct of a nuclear explosion. It can cook solid state electronics and computers. The great danger is that nuclear air bursts can take down the computers that manage our banking, our record-keeping, and even the ones that manage our automobiles. The military services have taken some steps to protect their electronic systems from EMP, mainly by shielding. However few of our civilian electronic systems are protected in any way from this threat.Obviously there are two ways to deal with it right now. One is to prevent the explosion by deterring a nuclear attack. The other is to find some way to protect our senstive electronics. What should we do, and what can we do starting today?
On a personal level: Buy a car made before 1973. With no computer parts, an EMP would not have any effect. Get a radio and TV that uses the old vacuum tubes. They are not effected by an EMP. And NEVER EVER get a heart pacemaker. If you got one of those, you are toast.
Q: I sold a small bit of electrical equipment to a guy in Norway - I'm in the UK.Item became faulty after a month - I said I would refund him but I had spent the cash already and couldn't repay him back in one go. Item was returned. He agreed that I could pay it up ?899 over 4 years as I'm just a student and not working full time. It was sent in his currency and ?899Trouble is he is now claiming I've not just to pay ?899 back but the amount is to be much more in GBP's as the pound as got weaker against his currency although he stated he wouldn't add any interest on. Any advice?
Question to you? Was any of this on paper or contracted in any way so that he has a legal advantage over you? And if not then in my opinion word of mouth is as good as it gets! And why should you have to reimburse any more than what was originally paid, not your fault the exchange in GBP's is weaker against his currency.
Q: Hey Guys !I just finished High school and I'm quite certain that Engineering is my first choice, however, I'm still a little bit hesitant. I'm choosing between electrical or mechanical! I think I like both majors and as far as I know Mechanical is the science of moving objects where you can get more hands-on experience , while electrical engineering is more imaginative. You can't really see electricity , thus it's more challenging ! To be honest , I like challenges but I don't want to end up regretting any decisions! Can anyone give me any insights , advices or opinions on both of majors ! What I'm going to study , what can I do , anything that could practically help me decide ! Thanks in advance
I believe you grasp the essential intellectual difference between the two fields. In the study of both disciplines there are laboratories where you build things. In electrical labs you build circuits, and in mechanical labs you use lathes, drill presses and milling machines to build mechanical devices. When you are out of school and working, you will most likely not be doing anything hands on except inspecting equipment, systems and facilities. Your principal work will be analyzing, documenting, reporting and creating design/construction documents. I had an orientation to both fields (mechanical and electrical) as from the time I was about 13 I rebuilt engines in a machine shop and loved to build all sorts of mechanical things on a farm. But I also liked to design and build receivers, transmitters, amplifiers, etc. Ulitmately, I was attracted more to electrical engineering because it seemed more esoteric and mysterious; but I think I would have been happy and successful in both fields, and possibly even in structural engineering. These fields apply math and the other sciences, and require creativity to find ideal solutions. Civil engineering seemed too mundane to me.
Q: i am very interested in pursuing a degree in any type of engineer that designs military equipment it can be communication equipment, guns, tanks, grenades, any type of equipment im just wondering what engineer or designer does that type of stuff
Well depend on the equipment. A mechanical equiment, by a mechanical engineer An electrical equipment, by an electrical engineer A transportation equipment, by mechanical, automotive, civil, topography, etc. engineer. Some weapons, chemical engineer, aerospacial engineer, civil engineer, topography and physics. Softwarewellsoftware engineer and stuff. The basecivil and structural engineer of course
