Aluminium foil acts as a total barrier to light and oxygen (which cause fats to oxidise or become rancid), odours and flavours, moistness, and germs, it is used broadly in food and pharmaceutical packaging. The purpose of aluminium is to make long-life packs (aseptic processing|aseptic packaging) for drinks and dairy goods, which allows storing without refrigeration. Aluminium foil containers and trays are used to bake pies and to pack takeaway meals, ready snacks and long life pet foods.
Aluminium foil is widely sold into the consumer market, often in rolls of 500 mm (20 in) width and several metres in length. It is used for wrapping food in order to preserve it, for example, when storing leftover food in a refrigerator (where it serves the additional purpose of preventing odour exchange), when taking sandwiches on a journey, or when selling some kinds of take-away or fast food. Tex-Mex restaurants in the United States, for example, typically provide take-away burritos wrapped in aluminium foil.
Aluminium foils thicker than 25 μm (1 mil) are impermeable to oxygen and water. Foils thinner than this become slightly permeable due to minute pinholes caused by the production process.
Aluminium foil has a shiny side and a matte side. The shiny side is produced when the aluminium is rolled during the final pass. It is difficult to produce rollers with a gap fine enough to cope with the foil gauge, therefore, for the final pass, two sheets are rolled at the same time, doubling the thickness of the gauge at entry to the rollers. When the sheets are later separated, the inside surface is dull, and the outside surface is shiny. This difference in the finish has led to the perception that favouring a side has an effect when cooking. While many believe that the different properties keep heat out when wrapped with the shiny finish facing out, and keep heat in with the shiny finish facing inwards, the actual difference is imperceptible without instrumentation. The reflectivity of bright aluminium foil is 88% while dull embossed foil is about 80%.
Aluminium (or aluminum; see spelling differences) is a chemical element in the boron group with symbol Al and atomic number 13. It is a silvery white, soft, ductile metal. Aluminium is the third most abundant element (after oxygen and silicon), and the most abundant metal in the Earth's crust. It makes up about 8% by weight of the Earth's solid surface. Aluminium metal is so chemically reactive that native specimens are rare and limited to extreme reducing environments. Instead, it is found combined in over 270 different minerals. The chief ore of aluminium is bauxite.
Aluminium is remarkable for the metal's low density and for its ability to resist corrosion due to the phenomenon of passivation. Structural components made from aluminium and its alloys are vital to the aerospace industry and are important in other areas of transportation and structural materials. The most useful compounds of aluminium, at least on a weight basis, are the oxides and sulfates.
Despite its prevalence in the environment, no known form of life uses aluminium salts metabolically. In keeping with its pervasiveness, aluminium is well tolerated by plants and animals. Owing to their prevalence, potential beneficial (or otherwise) biological roles of aluminium compounds are of continuing interest.
- Q: help! I preheated my oven to 392 degrees for 15 minutes and still my bread does not brown on top but only on the bottomany advice?
- loosely lay a sheet of aluminum foil over the top as you cook itOr put a glaze on the top that has sugar or egg in itSugar will brown the top as it cooks, the sugar in the glaze will caramelize.
- Q: ok, check it out.don't be intimidated by its length.bulkhead is a triangular shaped plate with a base and height of 2.5 m and 1.6 m, respectively, and a thickness of 8mmHow many 5cm diameter holes must be drilled through the bulkhead to reduce its mass by 8 kg? density of aluminum 2800 kg/m^3.any kind of help is appreciated, please don't say anything if you're not going to help meThanks very very much.
- actually, the shape and dimensions of the triangle are irrelevant the question deals with the holes you are to drill each hole has a volume of pi r^2 h where r is the radius of the hole0.025m and h is the thickness of the hole 8.0x10^-3m (note I change all units to meters) the volume of such a hole is then 1.57x10^-5 m^3 the mass lost by drilling out each hole is massdensityxvolume 2800 kg/m^3 x 1.57x10^-5 m^3 0.044 kg if this is the mass lost in one hole, the number of holes needed to lose 8 kg is 8kg/0.044kg/hole 182 holes check: the volume of the whole triangle is 1/2 base x height x thickness 1/2 2.5x1.6x0.008 0.016 m^3 the mass of a complete triangle is 2800 kg x 0.016m^3 44.8 kg.this shows there is more than enough mass to allow for 8 kg to be lost by drilling
- Q: A 10.0 V battery-operated bottle warmer heats 60.0 g of glass, 2.30 ? 10^2 g of baby formula, and 2.50 ? 10^2 g of aluminum from 25.0°C to 85.0°C(Hint: Assume that the specific heat of baby formula is about the same as the specific heat of water.) a.) How much charge (in C) is moved by the battery? (b) How many electrons per second flow if it takes 4.00 min to warm the formula? electron(s)
- a) Specific heat of glass: 750 J/kg K Specific heat of water: 4181 J/kg K Specific heat of aluminum: 921 J/kg K Convert grams of each to Joules absorbed by each Example calculation for glass: 60g (1 kg / 1000g) (750 J/kg K) (85 K - 25 K) 2700 J For water: 57700 J For Aluminum: 13800 J The energy absorbed by each part was energy given off from the battery so the sum of the energies absorbed is the total energy from the battery2700J + 57700J + 13800J 74200J We now use the definition of a Joule: J C V Since we know our volts, and found our Joules we solve for Coulombs 74200 J C 10V C 7420 C b) Convert from Coulombs to electrons 7420C (1 e / 1.6022E-19 C) 4.63 E22 electrons Convert minutes to seconds 4min (60s/ 1min) 240s Rate of electrons: 4.63E22 e / 240s 1.93E20 electrons/s
- Q: Hi, I'm drilling through some aluminum pieces that are about 3/8quot; thickI had drilled a bunch of 1/4quot; holes already, but I need to enlarge a few of them to 1/2quot;My problem is that I'll get almost all the way through, and then the bit will get stuck, and I'll have to reverseleaving behind a little flap of metal that I can't for the life of me get outThe drill just gets stuck and stops if I try to drill through it, or else it'll skip and just kinda go around that flapIs there some trick to dealing with this? Thanks!
- wish i cud help but i dont no
- Q: Me and some friends had this discussion about electromagnetic pulses.I heard two types of rumors about how to protect your electronics on themOne was to turn them completely offThe other was to wrap them in aluminum foil or stick them in a lead laced box. What I would like to know if these rumors hold any water whatsoever?.
- Ok, you NEED to report this, the longer you wait, the more girls he can go out to and do worse things toCall the cops, have them come to your house then when he calls, have them listen to another phone or have your phone on speaker phone, then act like you want to see him, get his address, and make sure the police get itYou Have to tell your parents about this, they can helpBest of luck, hope he gets locked up forever!
- Q: I have to determine which solution is in which tubeIs any body know a short cut to figure out each of them? the solutions are 6M HCL, 6M NH3, .1M CuSo4, .1M BaCL2, .1M NA2CO3, 3 M H1So4, 6M NaOH, .1M Pb(NO3)2, and Al(NO3)3Also what color are each of the solid when mixed? Please Help Me!!!
- I didn't use books or websitesI talked to pediatricians, other doctors and nursesI asked pediatricians what they did for their own childrenSame with nursesOverwhelmingly, they vaccinatedIt helps that I have an Uncle and cousin who are doctors, and 4 aunts and 6 cousins who are nursesWe're a medical familyEveryone who has kids has vaccinatedThere isn't a single issue in our very large family due to vaccinesIn fact, there isn't a single case of Autism in the whole bunch of us.
- Q: It needs to be light but strong and I need to find a cheap tube bender and a site that sells tubing.
- hum in the attic eww i just had a pipe freeze under my sinki was gonna say maybe a space heater or hair dryer - but i dont know how hard that would be to get up there.
- Q: Aluminum foil with butter and flour coated on it instead of waxed paper.I have everything else except for the wax.
- Yes, Of course! It's the better way to do it anywayLess messMerry Christmas!
- Q: how do i remove it and replace it
- There should be 2 to 3 bolts holding it to the engine and/or engine bracketsIt's a large round aluminum object that has a pulley in the front of it and has many slits/openings cast into it to cool it offYou need a relatively flat and long pry bar to take tension off the idler/tensioner pulley and then you slip the belt off of the alternator pulleyIt will have 1 or 2 electrical plugs that go into itSince it sounds like you've never done this before I'd have someone who knows what they are doing do it for youThat's why mechanics existNot everyone has the ability to wrench on a carThough it's not rocket science you do need to be VERY knowledgeable in order to do most things on a carMany people just don't get it and never doUnless you grew up around cars or mechanics you should at least buy a Chilton or Haynes repair manual at you local auto parts store.
