Aluminium foil acts as a total barrier to light and oxygen (which cause fats to oxidise or become rancid), odours and flavours, moistness, and germs, it is used broadly in food and pharmaceutical packaging. The purpose of aluminium is to make long-life packs (aseptic processing|aseptic packaging) for drinks and dairy goods, which allows storing without refrigeration. Aluminium foil containers and trays are used to bake pies and to pack takeaway meals, ready snacks and long life pet foods.
Aluminium foil is widely sold into the consumer market, often in rolls of 500 mm (20 in) width and several metres in length. It is used for wrapping food in order to preserve it, for example, when storing leftover food in a refrigerator (where it serves the additional purpose of preventing odour exchange), when taking sandwiches on a journey, or when selling some kinds of take-away or fast food. Tex-Mex restaurants in the United States, for example, typically provide take-away burritos wrapped in aluminium foil.
Aluminium foils thicker than 25 μm (1 mil) are impermeable to oxygen and water. Foils thinner than this become slightly permeable due to minute pinholes caused by the production process.
Aluminium foil has a shiny side and a matte side. The shiny side is produced when the aluminium is rolled during the final pass. It is difficult to produce rollers with a gap fine enough to cope with the foil gauge, therefore, for the final pass, two sheets are rolled at the same time, doubling the thickness of the gauge at entry to the rollers. When the sheets are later separated, the inside surface is dull, and the outside surface is shiny. This difference in the finish has led to the perception that favouring a side has an effect when cooking. While many believe that the different properties keep heat out when wrapped with the shiny finish facing out, and keep heat in with the shiny finish facing inwards, the actual difference is imperceptible without instrumentation. The reflectivity of bright aluminium foil is 88% while dull embossed foil is about 80%.
We provide a full range of precision aluminum strip for almost any application. We produce aluminum strip in a wide variety of alloys, including clad composites. Aluminium (or aluminum; see spelling differences) is a chemical element in the boron group with symbol Al and atomic number 13. It is a silvery white, soft, ductile metal. Aluminium is the third most abundant element (after oxygen and silicon), and the most abundant metal in the Earth's crust. It makes up about 8% by weight of the Earth's solid surface. Aluminium metal is so chemically reactive that native specimens are rare and limited to extreme reducing environments. Instead, it is found combined in over 270 different minerals. The chief ore of aluminium is bauxite.
Aluminium is remarkable for the metal's low density and for its ability to resist corrosion due to the phenomenon of passivation. Structural components made from aluminium and its alloys are vital to the aerospace industry and are important in other areas of transportation and structural materials. The most useful compounds of aluminium, at least on a weight basis, are the oxides and sulfates.
Despite its prevalence in the environment, no known form of life uses aluminium salts metabolically. In keeping with its pervasiveness, aluminium is well tolerated by plants and animals. Owing to their prevalence, potential beneficial (or otherwise) biological roles of aluminium compounds are of continuing interest.
- Q: A small piece of aluminum (atomic number 13) contains 10^15 atoms (The atomic number is the number of protons; it determines the (positive) electric charge of the nucleus and, thus, the number of electrons in a neutral atom.) If the piece of aluminum has a net positive charge of 3.0mewC what fraction of the electrons that the aluminum had when it was neutral would have had to be lost?1.410^-21(3/2080)(3/160)1.910^-20

- Q: I dont have a cookie sheetcan a bake cookies on top of aluminum foil?
- If you have a pizza pan, you can use thatIf not, you can take a large sheet cake pan, turn it upside down and use thatYou will need to watch closely as cooking time might be different.
- Q: Does the aluminum foil can be effective in the environment of temperature 430 degree?
- The melting point of aluminum is 660.4 degreeand the boiling point is 2467 degree. The aluminum foil has heat resistance.aluminium oxide is white powder and covalent compound, with melting point 2050℃ and boiling point 3000℃.
- Q: I have a potluck party and would like to know for how long should I keep rice to warm in an oven in aluminium foil tray,,Also should it be covered with aluminium foil when its kept to warm or it should be open.Kindly tell me the time to keep to warm.also I believe i will have to pre heat the oven for 20 min before putting food to warm
- It can dependSome girls have them in their back, others have them in their stomach/abdominal areaOthers might have some of eachThe severity and duration also dependsSome girls only have some light issues the first day, others last throughout their whole periodFor me personally, it's always my lower stomach area that hurtsThey aren't always severe (thankfully), but when they are, ugh! It makes you want to cry / Luckily, even if they are exceptionally painful, mine only last for a couple hours of the first day, then I'm good.
- Q: At the supermarket I was looking for parchment paper but the Reynolds Wrap non-stick sheets were all I found, and i wanted to know if there is a major difference between them or if they are basically the same? Thanks :)

- Q: Is it possible to use aluminum foil as a substitute for a pizza crust?
-
While aluminum foil isn't traditionally used to make a pizza crust, it's technically possible to use it as a makeshift solution. However, it won't provide the same texture or taste as a real pizza crust. Aluminum foil lacks the structural integrity to hold the toppings and will not crisp up like dough. It's better to use a proper pizza crust or a similar dough-based alternative if you want a traditional pizza experience.

- Q: All the teacher gives us is a cup and I also need to make a lidWhat materials could I use and put it on to keep the heat in for atleast a couple oh hours or more? I though of tin foil and that is it.
- Yep, aluminum foil works as a heat reflector, but also as a heat conductor, so you need to have 'dead air' space between it and the outside airTry thisAluminum foil, then 2-3 layers of paper towels (the 'fluffier' the towel the better), then Foil again, then towels then foil againDon't forget the bottom of the cupYou can fold the foil into the cup, but keep the towels out, or they may get wet and lose their insulating propertiesFor the lid, same thing, just fold it over the whole outside of the insulated cup, making sure it is a snug fitYou don't want to crush the insulation, but you don't want air to get in easily, eitherTry this with some ice cubes and cold waterIf it doesn't last long enough, add a few more layers.
- Q: I am making a pie crust for a coconut cream pie and the recipe tells me that I need to line the pastry with parchment paper and put pie weights or beans on topI don't have any parchment paper so would it be okay to use wax paper instead?
- Hey EinsteinJust make the recipe proportionately smaller.
- Q: What is called soft canned?
- Is a retort temperature polyester, aluminum foil, polyolefin film packaging made of composite materials for the packaging containers cooking bags and are sealed, sterilized and prepared for long-term preservation of packaged foods.
