- Any tile, when properly set will work fine, but your much better off with a hard bodied or a porcelain type tile.These well average in price between1/3$ per s/f and higher of course. - Q: We‘re renovating an old house, and the ceramic tile on the bathroom walls is just awful. I‘d like to replace the wall tile with beadboard. The tiles appear to be mortared directly onto the drywall. Is it a good idea to install the beadboard directly over the ceramic tile? Or should we chip of the tile or remove the lower portion of the drywall? I‘d like to do this as easily as possible, but not at the risk of shoddy workmanship.Also - all the beadboards I‘ve looked at are either painted or primed on the front surface, with a bare wood surface on the rear (glued to the wall). Is it advisable to paint/prime the rear surface as well before installation? With all the steam and moisture in a bathroom, I can envision the panels buckling. Is there a particular paint/primer that seals off from moisture particularly well?
- It's better to remove the tile altogether, including the old backer board. We did that as insurance, we found there was no insulation in the wall so it was good that we did. Cover the entire wall with sheetrock (green board, meant for a wet location) then glue the beadboard in place with water proof adhesive (applied with a caulk gun). It's worth the extra time and effort for your own house and you'll know it's done correctly and will last for many years to come. Good luck, been there done that and still in the process. It's a labor of love, I guess! :o)
- Q: My husband and I are going to redo a very small, four by four, half bath over Thanksgiving weekend. I‘ve picked up bits and pieces of advice about installing the marble floor tiles I‘ve bought, but I want to make sure I have the right advice before starting this or buying anything:Tile must be sealed both before and after installing, and the best sealer is Sealers Choice Gold. This will seal both the tile and the grout. Preinstall sealing should be done after cutting, not before. Do the tile edges need to be sealed as well or only the tops?Only white modified thinset should be used (brand recommendations?)Non-sanded grout should be used, and 1/8 inch spacing is acceptable for 12x12 tiles.Tiles should be wrapped before cutting to avoid breakage? I‘ve never seen this recommended before, but I‘ve also never installed marble.Thanks so much!
- Marble tile floors have been around for centuries. Even today, in an age of much simpler and less expensive options, marble remains synonymous with elegance and class. Installing marble is more complicated than installing ceramic or other types of tiles because the marble can't be cut on a standard tile cutter, instead needing a wet saw. Also, since the tiles are straight-cut in their manufacture, the tile surfaces have to be completely even with one another.

- Some general guidelines , but don t pay strict attention to is thickness, maker of the tile body of the tile, and price.. Some major brands include, American Olean, Florida Tile, Dal Tile,Interceamic,Lauflen. There are more out there but these will give you a start. Look through their selection on line to get some ideas and each site will have a store locator to find a dealer near you. If this floor will be in a high traffic area and you want easy maintenance, stick with ceramics and porcelains. Natural stones like marbles and travertines look great but must be sealed before installation, after installation and every so often after. In a residential setting regular ceramics wil work fine, porcelains are very nice but over sold by salespeople that really don t know.Theres nothing wrong with them just don t go looking for only them. Installation (on average) is in the 4/5$ a s/f range. This may or may not include floor prep such as the PROPER (thickness) backer board needed in most residential settings. - Q: i‘m seventeen and my family is moving into a new house soon. I get my own bathroom and would like to redo it a little bit, because it looks like it is straight out of that seventies show. we are going to have to go pretty cheap on the interior design because of the big purchase, so it cant be anything too expensive. the only real problem is the walls of the bathroom are tiled.
- Wow, I was expecting to see some gaudy awful tile. This tile looks brand new and is in great shape. Not only that, it really is not some horrible, obnoxious color, either. Because this is in a shower, there is nothing you can do that will be on the cheap because it does have to be water proof to avoid mold and mildew problems. If there is a paint to go over tile in a shower, I am unaware of such a product. It is never cheap to take down and replace this amount of tile. Just get a cool shower curtain and that will take care of that. Or, just do what I would do, embrace it and find some funky and fun way to incorporate the green and yellow into your color scheme. That tile really is not all that bad, considering what I have seen in my day. Blue goes well with yellow and green and so does red. Go shop for some shower curtains and you will be sure to find something you can live with. Good luck, and like I said, there are far worse tiles and colors you could have been stuck with.
- Q: I would like to install laminated flooring in my kitchen. Two of the wall are tiled. Is it possible to undercut these tiles or is there an easier method to do a neat installation?
- The box usually has pretty good instructions on it, otherwise ask the people where you bought the tiles. You can use the tiles themselves as spacers between the wall and the tiles so that there is a gap. Just place them on edge. Or you can get plastic spacers from any DIY store. This is to leave room for expansion so the tiles don't warp. You can then cover the gap with floor trim. Good luck. It is fairly easy.
- Q: I absolutely hate the tile in our main bath, its coming up and in a few places there is no grout, so its basically looks awful. The bathroom is my dogs fav place to be and i am constantly sweeping the gobs of hair that get in the cracks. Are there any suggestions for an eay fix? How much trouble would it be to just fill the cracks with grout and put stick tile over it? Would that be a ridiculous idea?

- Wash your tiles first - then use BIN primer (it will adhere to your tiles). Then paint with the paint of your choice. BIN is a primer.

- If it is glazed tiles, with a gray knife or iron to large scraping off, leaving a small part of the cotton yarn wiped on the line. If it is quintana brick, (that is, no glazed), the first scraping more, and then wipe with a wire wipe off on the line.
