- Hello, I own a tanning bed and I'm also an electrician. A tanning bed that has more bulbs puts out more uva uvb (ultraviolet rays @ alpha and beta wave lenghs) light than a tanning bed with fewer bulbs. A tanning bed with qty 24, 100 watt bulbs ( 24 X's 100 = 2,400 watts) will emit (as a general rule of thumb) approxiamately double the light as a 1,200 watt bed. ( 12 X's 100 = 1,200 watts) in a given time period. In a nutshell, a 2,400 watt bed can do the same work as a 1,200 watt in half the time. Expressed another way would be, (1200 watt exposure in 10 minutes = 2400 watt in 5 minutes) :) So each of your tanning sessions are shorter with a higher output tanning beds as compared to a bed with a lower output. Frankly I have allot of time, so I don't mind laying down at my private bedroom beach (my tanning bed) a little longer with a fewer amount of bulbs. A bed with fewer bulbs also has less maint cost in relation to bulbs, ballasts, bulb starters, ect..... Tanning beds should be used with care, and always follow manufactuer instructions, that said.
