Iron is black and ferromagnetic in nature and sulphur is a amorphous yellow element whereas iron sulphide is gray, non-magnetic and crystalline. The mixture of Iron and Sulphur is a heterogeneous solid-solid mixture. When dilute Hydrochloric acid is poured over the mixture it would emit hydrogen gas as only Iron reacts and sulphur doesn't. If one heats this mixture in a dry test-tube Iron(II) sulphide would be formed.
