The doses are quite high so if you aren't anemic you could end up poisoning yourself. Unless your doctor told you to take iron, stick with a multivitamin, they contain iron but in lower dosages That being said, the most effective is heme iron. Your body processes it like it's real food, not metal

- Low iron wouldn't have impacted you in terms of having a miscarriage. (unless it was REALLY low but that's incredibly rare) And iron doesn't up your chances of conceiving either. However, I agree with everyone else in that you need to get your iron situation under control before TTC another child. I had a problem with iron supplements and taking a prenatal vitamin. (Too much iron makes you constipated) so My dr. recommended taking two flintstone vitamins instead. Works great!! Good luck!

- Mine is borderline now - right between low and normal. It's great that you are paying close attention to your levels - when my iron is low, my blood pressure goes way down too. You'll need to monitor that as you get older. I think you are too young for vitamins, but if you need to take something that will boost your iron immediately, take Floradix Iron - You can get it at any health food store. It's like a sweet fruit juice syrup that you store in the fridge -- you have to use up the whole bottle in the time specified, about 2 or 3 weeks. Oh, and be sure to brush your teeth after taking it so you don't look like you swallowed a bunch of ink! ;) Also, make some dietary changes. I know FOR SURE, that eating 1 cup of red grapes every single day will have your iron up in no time at all. Also try foods that are rich in iron, like beets and spinach. If at any point in your life, you end up taking iron supplements, I just want to caution youIf you ever find that, when you go to the bathroom, your 'waste' (for lack of a more dignified word ;) appears to have little black specks in it - kind of like sandthen that's your cue to know that your body is not absorbing the supplement. - It would be much better if you consider taking a good multi vitamin instead of taking an iron pill (some thing like Centrum is great) Iron pills are naturally OK but in some cases they can poison you if it is high in iron concentration. There fore a good multi vitamin is great because it has some thing of every thing which your body needs (meaning all the essential vitamins and minerals) I am anemic and my doctor lets me take this multi vitamin cause iron pills tend to make my tummy ache
