Vinyl's cheaper (not by much though since it's a petroleum product), feels softer warmer underfoot. However, it can tear crack easier than tile. Tile can crack, but not easily. How about hardwoods?? They can go in every room, it's green, easy to care for, adds value to your home. Consider doing tile in the baths hardwood everywhere else.

Q: I want to install Travertine tile to a fireplace surround. This would be travertine tile directly to sheetrock, painted with flat latex paint. This areawould never see moisture other than something the wet grout and sealer. Is this OK? Will the sheetrock hold the weight of the tiles? What prep is needed? Or am I asking for trouble?: installing directly to sheetrock will not cause the tiles to break or the installation to fail. 75% of new homes are tile to sheetrock on fireplaces. mastic is never a good idea. Because this is not an area that will get wet, you might get by, but honestly... Why spend $35 for a pail of mastic when $20 will give you a 50# bag of modified thinset? So yes, sheetrock will support the weight of the tiles on a fireplace surround. No prep is needed. Cut tiles, thinset, and set. Also a tip... Some people like to caulk around the inside of the surround, as the grout tends to crack there with the expansion/contraction of the metal from using the fireplace. Don't do it. It'll look good for a little while, but it will stink every time you use the fireplace. If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask. Good luck!

Thank you in advanced.: If you don't want to pay for the labor to have it cleaned, you will be the one to do it yourself. Elbo Grease. Get some Tile Acid Cleaner from the Home dpot/Lowes, and a couple of hand held scrub brushes, some plastic bristles, some metal bristles, (to see which works best). Get a spray bottle, poor the acid into it. do not delut with water. Not until after it has sat on it for 5 min and you have scrubbed and scrubbed. Then spray with water (lightly Misting) and wipe up with disposable towels. Dont forget the rubber gloves. After the entire floor is finished or until you are satisfied (or if you want to do in Stages) wait until entirely dry and get some Tile Sealer and begin to apply. Pay attention to the grout lines first then mop all over the tile. The cost for materials will be about $50--$70 But the labor is where the real money is. Have Fun I do not envy you.

Also, if there is existing tile you want to remove it first. You can buy a tile removal scraper from Home Depot or Lowe's for about $25. Then you use it to pick up and scrape the existing tile. It is not hard laying tile but you do need to work your way towards the door so you don't tile yourself in. The adhesive may get a bit messy so get some adhesive remover to use after it dries. Just search for good easy cleaners. simple windex on the ceiling? not much soap up there?
