- Q:I have a box turtle, and I want to change the substrate I use. WHat should I use? I want it to be pretty cheap because he loves to dig, so it has to be deep, and I have a TON of floor area to cover. Thanks!
- The vermiculite will only have a very small chance of having asbestos in it. typically the suspect vermiculite came from one area in Montana and was a very small portion of the total amount mined. as for laying insulation on top of the vermiculite -- yeah, no problem in doing that.
- Q:you see this week i have went every where looking for this stuff called vermiculite or perlite? which is used mostly by every reptile egg expert well as i went i was looking everywhere to find it as i went to home depot the other day i asked one of the workers if they had any of the two so i can incubate my leopard gecko eggs being a beginner in the reptile industry. all she told me is the closest thing they've had what i was looking for was ironite all i wanted to know from anyone can tell me, can i use ironite to incubate my eggs is it the same thing and is it safe thats my only per caution please help asap thank you :)
- Those white things are vermiculite and yes, your soil is just fine.
- Q:was thinking of renting a bob cat to level , then roll over the ground back and forth to pack the dirt down. Any ideas /tips would be greatly appreciated , seeing as Im a woman and im doing this all on my own for the 1st time!, Ive called around my area and no1 offers help . Sheesh i thought money talks! ;op thanks in advance for the ideas.
- pumice does not sink in water unless it has been floating for many years
- Q:can i use vermiculite as a substrate for my leopard gecko? if not, what else could i use instead?
- KAOLINITE - small pseudo-hexagonal plates. It is a layered silicate mineral, with one tetrahedral sheet linked through oxygen atoms to one octahedral sheet of alumina octahedra. SMECTITE - derived from pyrophyllite or talc but with a slight negative charge as a result of ionic substitutions in the octahedral tetrahedral sheets FINE GRAINED MICAS - crystallise in the monoclinic system but the forms approximate those of the hexagonal system. Micas have sheet structures whose basic units consist of two polymerised sheets of silica (SiO4) tetrahedrons. Two such sheets are juxtaposed with the vertices of their tetrahedrons pointing toward each other; the sheets are cross-linked with cations—for example, aluminium in muscovite—and hydroxyl pairs complete the coordination of these cations VERMICULITE - monoclinic but usually pseudomorphous. Vermiculite is a 2:1 clay, meaning it has 2 tetrahedral sheets for every one octahedral sheet. Vermiculite has a high cation exchange capacity at 100-150 meq/100 g. Vermiculite clays are weathered micas in which the potassium ions, after biotite or phlogopite, between the molecular sheets are replaced by magnesium and iron ions. CHLORITE - monoclinic; forms are at times pseudo-hexagonal. Chlorites have a 2:1 sandwich structure (2:1 sandwich layer = tetrahedral-octahedral-tetrahedral = t-o-t...), this is often referred to as a talc layer. Unlike other 2:1 clay minerals, chlorite's interlayer space (the space between each 2:1 sandwich filled by a cation) is composed of (Mg2+, Fe3+)(OH)6. Essentially, the crystal structure of each of these minerals are very similar.
- Q:I bought an orchid two days ago for Mothers day.The plant‘s soil is wrapped tightly in a plastic bag with a drainage hole. It is then place into the pot supplied, so it isn‘t actually planted in the pot. I can see condention on the plastic bag. I am worried that the trapped water will cause root rot. Do I take out the plastic packaging and place the plant in the pot? Also, how can I tell when a orchid needs watering. If you could also supply me with basic information on how to look after a Phalaenopsis orchid, that would be great!Ps its in moss.
- I recommend removing the plastic and letting it dry out some. Then I would remove all the moss/soil and plant it in a nice pot using some orchid bark (it is a mixture of large particles of bark, charcoal, vermiculite and some moss. Youu may need to stake it such that it is supported until the roots can establish and take hold. I do not water mine from the top. I take a wide pan and put the orchid in the pan and then start to add water until the water is covering the bottom of the orchid pot. I let it sit there for a few hours and then I remove it and let it drain. Then I can bring it back into the house to a semi-sunny location. This seems to give the orchid all the water it needs and allows the bark to absorb some so the orchid can get it that way. Watering from the top just allows the water to run through since there is no soil. Before too long you should see some budding growth. I can keep blooms on my phalaenopsis for up to 6-7 months this way. Good luck.
- Q:Can planting soil sand be replaced with perlite or vermiculite?
- Rotten leaves are made of fallen leaves and hay. High humus content, strong water retention and good permeability are one of the main materials for preparing cultivated soil. There are two kinds of mountain mud, black mud and Mount Huangshan mud. A long accumulation of fallen leaves from mountain trees. Heishan mud is acidic and contains more humus. The Mount Huangshan mud is also acidic and contains less humus.Peat soil is carbonized from peat moss. Due to the different stages of formation, Brown Peat and black peat are divided into two types. Brown Peat is rich in organic matter and acidic. Black peat contains more minerals, organic matter is less, and it is slightly acidic or neutral. The rice chaff ash after burning into ash shell, slightly alkaline, potassium, water permeability.
- Q:does any one know where i can find to buy Vermiculite,Perlite,Brown Rice Flower. oh and small half pint mason
- for the geckos about 50, the incubator! all arounf 120-150
- Q:contractors creating custom faux stone walls?
- I have used latex based paints one base paints and two minor paints bright paint and several ocean sponges. used you base paint as the main coverdabbed with a sponge can lighten the paint if you want and then two colorsover base dabbed in random pattern. Now use the light colored piant with a long flight feather randomly twisting and rotating and dragging the feather across the painted surface. This is not a perfection thing if you ever have noticed marble has flaws and comes in many colors so have fun practicing. Look at some different marbles and use those colors.
- Q:last night my bearded dragon layed her eggs in her large water bowl,i didntsee them till this morning. she layed 22 all together. i took them out and put them in the container with vermiculite and into the incubator. that was 5 hours ago now. they are still very plum and if i candlelight them i can see the pink spot inside, only thing is they have a yellow tint to them and smell. is there any chance there still alive?what should i do please help!!
- What you SHOULD have done was taken the large bowl out and put a small one in. Remember that next time you breed her (if she wasn't bred, why are you incubating slugs? XD). You're probably **** out of luck this time. Incubate the eggs until you're 100% sure they're not going to hatch (i.e. they start to leak or such).
- Q:I know I need jars, spores, pressure cooker, a terranium, but what else do I need? Should I use Rye Seed or...?
- No, you cannot it is not a safe substrate to use. If you are looking for a more soil in nature type substrate try buying Eco Earth that is a 100% pure cocofiber substrate. Please visit CrabbyWiki for further information regarding substrates.
