Any piercing (even lobes) is better done with a needle. The needle hurts less, is sterile (where a gun can't be sterilized), and the piercer has lots of experience and will use the right length of jewelry for YOUR anatomy. Mine didn't hurt much..the second hole was definately worse then the first though. It may be sore for months afterwords, they take a year to heal. The one I've had for 3 years still gets sore although it's fully healed.

Using a sterile saline wound wash spray twice a day to keep it clean will help soften it up and it will come off within time. You can take baths but you really need to make sure your head never gets submerged under the water while your piercing is healing. Washing your hair under the faucet is fine but rinsing it in the water you're sitting in is not.
