- I happen to keep a programme for heat exchangers that I had used, for educanional purposes, some time ago. Running the programme step by step on your information I got, NTU = 1524.342. The subsequent calculation for the effectiveness (E) shows that, E = 1, which leads to the emergence of water (as steam!!) at 385 K, the same as that of the oil at entry. This not realistic, in assuming no phase change, and I think the problem lies with the very low flow rate of water. If you are only interested in the value of the effectiveness then its value as stated above with the optimum amount of heat transfer. For the heat exchanger to work with water undergoes no phase change the flow of water has to be more than tripled.
- Q: Ok so my 10 yr old furnace started having issues with oil smell coming out of vents throughout house. Repair guy said it had to be a cracked heat exchanger because of the force of air that was blowing back into to house from the unit (he had me feel the air blowing back from one of the covered holes in the furnace). He cleaned and checked everything including taking apart the pipe to the chimney and pulling out the blower. He could not see the crack but was sure it must be on top where he could not get to. So we elected to install a new Armstrong furnace. It has been 6 days and I can still smell the faint smell of oil through the vents, is this normal? He checked for blockages by the way. Also would the wrong nozzle installed cause a heat exchanger to crack?

- it could be that the heat exchanger door is stuck as well. the only way to tell is to tear apart the dash and look for the door inside the duct system that switches from the a/c condensor to the heater core. another possiblity is that the heater control valve is stuck. it is inline with the heater hoses that run through the firewall. it may be stuck which would not allow any heated water to run through the heater core. it is probably not the heater core, unless it is just plain clogged with debris from not changing the coolant. best thing is to take it to a reputable mechanic who will inspect it and tell you what it is. gm mechanics would probably be the best for that cadillac. you don't have to necessarily send it to a cadillac dealer either. any gm shop will work.

- It takes time for the heat to stop after the thermostat hits its set point. The thermostat controls the furnace. The heater fan is controlled by the heat exchanger. so whenever the exchanger is warm the fan blows.
