- Q: what is a heat pump, how does it work?
- A heat pump works just like a refrigerator except it runs in reverse. The heat pump has a coil outside for house where the Freon is allowed to evaporate. Then the Freon gas is pumped into your house where it is converted to a gas and in so doing, gives off heat.Then the Freon goes back outside to evaporate again. It is a closed system, like a fridge. It works best it the outside coil is set in water ( not ice) rather than in open air.This is because cold air does not have much energy in it that you can take out.
- Q: I've just been wondering, I have this physics project and we have a budget of ?50,000, at the moment I'm well under budget which is good but I was just wondering, if i locate a house near a hot spring, could i use the hot spring for heating the house, i can use it for hot water but I'm not sure about heating, if i can, how? Thanks :)
- The most simplest method will be to use a simple heat exchanger and blower. The hot water springs can be pumped into the unit having the blower.Inside the unit use copper pipes in front of the blower to transfer the heat to air.Remember to use insulated cpvc pipes so as to minimize heat loss while pumping water from source to unit. This is a cheap yet effective method of heating. However if the spring is really good that is it can make superheated steam then you can use it to generate electricity.then the electricity can be further supplied to an heater. Finding such springs is really difficult and it is more difficult to harness geothermal energy and it is also quite expensive. i would suggest you use concentrating solar or biogas for your project which is more efficient as well as cheap.
- Q: copper is necessary for tubes carrying ammonia in heat exchanger?
- Aqueous ammonia is quite corrosive to copper, so I think I would use stainless....
- Q: We fixed the belt pulley and now the heater just keeps going on and off and on and off every few minutes. Could there be an internal thermostat in the unit that is messed up now? I also replaced the batteries in the programmable thermostat just to be sure that wasn't it.
- May be the high limit switch in or near the plenum is defective, or did you replace the transformer? If you did you might have burned out the heat anticipator in your thermostat.
- Q: More on fouling resistance that happens in heat exchanger.
- Fouling resistance is due to to accumulated deposits on the the flow surface usually in tubes such as heat exchangers where fouling can occur inside the tubes or outside the tubes as in cooling towers. Sedimentation occurs due to the hot surface which causes the extract of chemicals, like calcium carbonate, for instance and deposit them on the surface. There are other fouling agents such as the bio deposited in pipes or on membranes as in reverse osmosis water purification. Normally preventive maintenance is the best way to combat fouling. Such as using copper amalgam pipes with at least 70% Copper. This type of pipes prevent bio fouling in the pipes. Other things used are sponge balls covered with abrasive material. Also small brushes are used in the flow stream. To remove fouling one can use cleaning solutions, chemicals, mechanical action like scraping and brushing.
- Q: I have two fluids entering a shell and tube heat exchanger.One enters at 393K and leaves at 323KThe other fluid enters at 353K and leaves at 308K.Is this even possible?
- It is not clear if these are measured numbers or calculated numbers. In the case of measured numbers I have seen such things happen due to errors in temperature measurement. In the case of calculated numbers I can only see a case where a fluid can enter an exchanger at a given temperature and leave at the same temperature while the other fluids is cooled down. That is the case of liquid such as a refrigerant liquid that enters the exchanger at its boiling temperature, boils and then leaves the exchanger at the boiling temperature.
- Q: When I turn on the heat, in one particular bedroom very minimal air is blowing out. All other vents work fine. Will this require a major work or can I fix this myself. Please advise. If I need to get someone to look at this, how much will they charge.- Confused new home owner
- Hey Confused, This issue could be caused by many things. Sometimes, it is something silly like something stuck in the venting directly below the affected vent. (I've seen sweaters that have been shoved down vents to cut off the air flow). It could be that the vent has been closed off somewhere down the line (likely in the basement) to reduce the flow. Having the vents cleaned and inspected would be a good way to determine if there is a bigger problem (needing to have parts of your HVAC system re-levelled) and could likely solve the issue. If not, you will still need to call in an HVAC technician to diagnose the problem.
- Q: My Rheem gas heating furnace in my attic has started to exhibit a problem. I came home to find it blowing cold air constantly. I opened up the furnace and found that one of the three round temperature sensors had quot;trippedquot;. They each have a tiny reset button on top of them. It was the top sensor that has it's face positioned downward, that had quot;trippedquot;. So I pushed the reset button and restarted the furnace. It worked for about an hour, then it tripped again and the furnace started blowing cold air. What happens is the burners shutoff when the sensor is tripped, but the fan stays on continuously. This continuous cold air mode apparently is quot;as designedquot; by Rheem and tells you that something is wrong. There are four burners inside my Rheem furnace. One of them seems to be spitting flames occassionally in the opposite direction of the normal gas/flame flow. Backdrafting I guess it the best word for it. What could be causing that? It must be what's tripping the sensor.
- Few things could be causing the flame to pull back from the heat exchanger. Plugged filter isn't one of them. You should make sure your filters are clean but thats not the issue. It would help if I knew what kind of burners you had? Are they ribbon burners or cone? How old the furnace is? Is it laying on its side or standing upright? So there are a few things here that could be causing flame roll out. One the carry over on the burner that you see the flame rolling out is dirty. The end of the burner that connects to the pipe that comes from the gas valve comes out to a tee. all the burners should have this it makes them almost touch each other. There is a small groove in this tee that carries the flame from the burner with the pilot light or hot surface igniter over to the other burners. now if you take a small wire brush one that is as small as a toothbrush and clean that small groove it will allow the flame to travel faster across the burners. be very careful not to break the hot surface igniter if that is what you have. Another problem that I have seen before is a spiders nest in the jet that pushes the gas into the burner. This is hard to get out and usually takes an orifice bit to clean it. Another situation is that the section of heat exchanger that the burner is burning in has soot build up in it and is not letting the combusted gas vent out quick enough. your gas valve may not be opening completely when it is first engaged. It may also be that the limit that keeps on tripping is old and needs to be replaced. They dont last forever. Under any of these conditions I would still recommend that you call a tech to come out and look at it.
- Q: What are the types of cleaning for shell and tube heat exchanger?
- The only effective clean for a shell and tube is a chemical clean. Some you can open up and power clean the tube bundle and the shell side but others are sealed. It depends on what type you have but if you don't want to be pulling it apart simple circulate the appropriate chemical cleaner through both sides of the exchanger. Be careful to use what ever the manufacturer recommends which will depend on what the process is being used for. Unless you are in a processing plant I assume you are talking about a hot water system which will be pushing steam through the shell side and water through the tubes or vica versa and you are trying to remove scale build up or similar. There are some good anti scale chemicals available on the market which can be used safely. Hope this helps
- Q: My furnace technician inspected my heat exchanger and he suggested that the exchanger is not sealed. He determined that by injecting water into the furnace (Must be into the exchanger) and he found the water on the floor. Is that a reliable method of identifying seal-broken heat exchanger? What is the risk of operating the exchanger in a house with infants?
- never heard of putting water in to check that , get a second opinion and get a carbon monoxide detector , nighthawk makes good ones , you should have one anyway
