- the screaming is more a signature of hardcore which is derived more from punk than anything, but has been brought in to metal through its sub genres (primarily thrash) but Metal is essentially just hard rock with heavily distorted guitars, fast bass lines, and intricate drums.

- In all honesty I think it has a lot to do with the vocals and some of the instrumentation. A lot of the groups that are considered nu-metal tend to have cleaner vocals. By clean I mean they sing a lot more than traditional metal groups. Nu-metal groups with the exception of maybe Slipknot because of Jordison and his tempo usually aren't quite as fast-paced and don't use as much double bass either. Those are really the only things that stick out between them. However as someone mentioned genre grouping is subjective and there is no clear cut answer. I just see Nu-metal as a intermediate between hard rock and metal. The bands typically placed in this category are badass though (i.e. Slipknot, Korn, Disturbed, SOAD).
