- Q: It has been installed on a concrete slab for about five months now, could the slab not have cured right or is the tile layed wrong?
- probably there was dirt or something under the tile proir the installation. or the adhesive was not put on properly. you will need to remove the tile, clean the floor completely and re install, and re grout.
- Q: I have asbestos tiles in my basement (of a home I recently purchased). I sent them off to a lab for testing. The lab results came back 4% asbestos. I definitely want to remove the tiles. The majority of the tiles are in good shape. Some of the corners on a few of them are cracking. Right now I am considering the DIY vs. hiring the pros for removalI have been given conflicting advise thus far. Some say do it yourself, there is a very low percentage of asbestos in your tiles -- 4%. Others say Don‘t risk it, pay for the peace of mind. Here are my questions: Is 4% a low percentage for asbestos tiles? Is this low enough to be trivial or of lessor concern when taking on DIY removal? The pros quoted me $1300 for removal and an additional $275 for an air quality test/certification. Is this a fair price for about 500 square feet of tiles? Is air quality testing really necessary given the low percentage of asbestos in my tiles? Or, are they just making money off the fear and hysteria around asbestos?

- Q: We have ceramic tile on the wall in the bathroom with a few tiles of color. Hate to change whole bathroom.
- You can paint it or change the tiles. I Cr 13;8a
- Q: After completing a bathroom tile job, including a tile baseboard border about 6 up from the floor, we have dried thinset in on the actual wall - places we missed during cleanup. I‘ve tried using some scrapers (plastic and metal), and the dried thinset is like concrete (naturally) and is pulling layers of drywall off with it. Is there a solvent or better way to remove the dried thinset from both the wall and the exposed rim of the tiles? As a last resort I might be okay with slight damage to the walls as they need serious prep anyway before paint, but I do want to make sure i haven‘t missed some very obvious, easier, better solution first.
- I have had tile layers do that to my drywall talking about PO! OK take a razor knife and carefully cut the paper around the grout peel paper away, then skim coat with mud, tapping mud you know loose. Best case if you are going to texture the wall if its not thick on the surface just texture it in. If a tile layer caused this tell him to pay for it or get out of town!
- Q: Please help! and give as much information you can about the invention of tiles!
- The earliest finds of roof tiles are documented from a very restricted area around Corinth (Greece), where fired tiles began to replace thatchet roofs at two temples of Apollo and Poseidon between 700-650 BC.[1] Spreading rapidly, roof tiles were within fifty years in evidence for a large number of sites around the Eastern Mediterranean, including Mainland Greece, Western Asia Minor, Southern and Central Italy.[2] Early roof tiles showed an S-shape, with the pan and cover tile forming one piece. They were rather bulky affairs, weighting around 30 kg apiece.[3] Being more expensive and labour-intensive to produce than thatchet, their introduction has been explained with their greatly enhanced fire resistance which gave desired protection to the costly temples.[4] The spread of the roof tile technique has to be viewed in connection with the simultaneous rise of monumental architecture in archaic Greece. Only the appearing stone walls, which were replacing the earlier mudbrick and wood walls, were strong enough to support the weight of a tiled roof.[5] As a side-effect, it has been assumed that the new stone and tile construction also ushered in the end of 'Chinese roof' (Knickdach) construction in Greek architecture, as they made the need for an extended roof as rain protection for the mudbrick walls obsolete. - Q: I am looking at putting the self stick vinyl tiles in my new addition. It has a concrete floor and I was wondering if the vinyl will have a hard time sticking to the concrete. Do I need some type of sub-floor? I am wondering this mainly because we live in iowa were is can get pretty cold in the winter and I didn‘t know if that would affect the stickyness.
- I think your bigger problem would be moisture. If this is in a basement there's a good chance that moisture could seep beneath the tiles and make the glue separate. A subfloor will significantly add to the cost, but it would keep the basement warmer, and lessen the chance of damage to the tiles. Be sure you build the subfloor out of treated wood though, or you could have rot/termites/many more problems.
- Q: Do I start in the middle like normal tile? What happens if I don‘t start in the middle due to the uneven wall?
- Personally I would dtart in the middle just like you asked. Are you planning to lay the tile on wood subfloor or conrete? Wood is by far the best way to go as the glue will stick better. If its wood then make sure all is clean and dry the use a laytex primer on the wood and let dry. This step is a must as its the primer that will activate the glue and not allow the tile to pop off after install. If its concrete then again make sure you sweep then clean the floor with TSP( very strong chemical wear gloves) this will get all the junk that maybe on the concrete ie oil, dirt, paint, wax you name it. alolow to dry then install the tiles. If onto vinyl then use the TSP again and then put an embosser levelor on top of the existing vinyl floor as this will create a smooth floor and not allow your old vinyl pattern to show through you new tiles. the final step I like to use is a rolling pin over the tiles to make sure the glue is biting into the floor well.
- Q: your supposed to?Would it damage the tiles?
- Not at all. You just wasted some vinegar and it might take longer for the smell to go away.
- Q: I need pink ceramic 4x4 tiles to repair an old bathroom. At least 80 of them. Where might I find them?
- 1 st try and determine whos tile it is, this will help cut down the looking time and possibly stop your looking all together .. If you have 1 spare tile look on the back to see if there there is any lettering on the back , this I ll help you with if you need help. Measure the tile , if its 4 3/8 ths you don t need to look at Florida tile, if its 4 1/4 start with American Olean and Interceramic if the tile is 15/20 years or older.. Anything else start by going to tile distributors and tile shops taking a tile or a pc with you. Realizing that you may not get a perfect tile match because of dye lots and shading even after a couple months this can be a problem.. Any questions e mail me through my avatar and I ll be glad to help and you can check my qualifications there .. GL
- Q: My mothers house has 9 tiles on her bathroom floor and I understand they are made with asbestos. Some of the tiles are starting to lift and I am concerned about how to remove and dispose of them, any suggestions?
- Professionals seal off the room with heavy plastic and even have a separate chamber to change into white suits and respirator and then they shower afterwards . You shouldn't be messing with it!
