- Can't help you with the color, that is a personal choice. As far as painting it, no problem. I remove all the hardware (except the hinges).I then sand it lightly, remove any rust that may be there. Just to be safe, I use an oil based primer (Rustoleum is a good choice) and then finish with an oil based paint. I know people will say latex is just as good, and it is for wood, but metal is a different story. Good luck.
