Solar panel working process
In addition to being the ultimate source of all life on earth, the sun is an infinitely renewable, completely pollution-free source of electricity. Instead of burning fossil fuels dug up from the ground in a big power plant – a very 19th century, industrial age approach, when you think about it – solar panels convert sunlight directly into electricity, with no harmful emissions.
The basic unit of a solar panel is a solar cell, which usually consists of one or two layers of silicon-based semiconductor wafers. When struck by the photons in sunlight, the solar cell generates an electrical charge due to the "photovoltaic effect" – which is a pretty good name, since it produces voltage from photons. The flow of these electrons moves in a steady electrical current from one side of the cell to the other.
Dozens of these PV cells are packaged together into solar modules, which in turn are packaged into solar panels that are mounted on a rooftop and arranged to maximize their hours of exposure to direct sunlight. Because the electricity generated by all those solar cells is direct current (DC), it is then sent to an inverter that transforms the power into the same alternating current (AC) used by the appliances in your home and the local utility electricity distribution grid. Increasingly, these inverters are getting "smart," providing data monitoring for solar installation performance and other grid integration services.

- Depending on the material and operating temperature of the panel, it MAY be possible to fix it very simply and easily by applying Hot Glue Gun adhesive over the cracked area. The high temperature glue gun adhesive melts at approximately 60 degrees Farenheit, and if the collector temperature does not quite reach, or exceed that operating temperature, then that repair method should work. Another possibility is an aerosol spray can product called LeakEnder. This is usually available at your local hardware store, or the major home improvement centers [like Lowe's, Sutherland's, Home Depot, McCoy's, etc.]. After preparing the area to be patched by cleaning, you just spray the LeakEnder patching material on the crack and an eighth of an inch or so around. IF the operating pressure or the collector is very low, it MAY even be possible to patch the leak with nothing more than a narrow strip of DUCT TAPE!!!!! Another possibility, but unless carefully accomplished is to weld the crack with a Soldering Gun and some scrap plastic from packaging material. The problem with this fix is that you must be very experienced in application of heat from the Soldering Gun, OR you will melt a larger hole in the collector tube than the crack was. Regardless of patching method, it is CRITICAL that the cracked area to be patched MUST be CLEAN and DRY BEFORE applying any patching material. Good luck!

- sure, but if you don't know what you are doing you could really hurt or kill yourself. Basically you can do whatever you want on your side of the power meter and in the rare occurrence when your solar panels are producing more power that your home is using the meter will run backwards and you will be feeding power to the grid and theoretically reducing your power bill. At the very least you will be using less power from the grid

- It is cheaper to have a solar regulator to extend the battery lifespan. A lead acid battery can vent hydrogen if charged too much and run out of electrolytes. The battery would cost more than a $30 5 amp solar regulator.

- Research using solar panels on stock tank water pumps. Same concept - you use a solar panel to power a remote something or other, only you would have to use a battery charged by day to run the camera at night. It does not look like you would need too powerful of a solar panel, the camera server says it needs less than 5w, no idea on the cameras, so check that out, but the whole system looks rather low power. You could easily get the necessary panels, maybe the battery too, for... I would say $200 (not in one package, you would have to get separate things). Connection of everything would be simple, no electrician needed (but keep that to yourself, depending upon state rules and regs).

- I had a system installed last year and am very happy with it so far. When I was getting quotes from companies we used a 3 year usage history that I was able to get from my utility. I live in an area that allows me to sell back my excess or let my meter run backwards, which really helps reduce costs. The amount of energy you use and can produce will vary during the year. I had monthly usage under 800 kwh and months over 2000 kwh. I have become more aware of my usage and have made adjustments to appliances and habits to cut my usage down. I installed a 3.74 kw dc system. On average in the summer I generate 35 kwh per day and in the winter I averagae around 2 kwh per day, but I've seen days as low as 2kwh. I don't see the benefit to hooking up a system to specifice appliances for 2 reasons. Your a/c doesn't run non stop, so the energy you produce when the system cycles off is lost. You only produce electricity when the sun is shining on the panels. If you have a cloudy day or it is hot after the sun goes down, you will need to still use household energy. My system doesn't zero out my bill, but it reduces it by about 75% in the summer and at least 50% in the winter. My bills were over $200 many months, my highest summer bill was $20 and highest winter bill was $35. My system cost $26K (less than my pool or hardwood floors), I got a $0K rebate from my utility and a $2K federal tax credit. The fed. tax credit has increased this year to 30% of the total installed price. I should break even in 6-7 years and save well over $50K over the life of the panels.
