- Q: Hello, I have been trying to go green, I Have purchase somesolar panel they are about 45watts I been putting it against my window and getting ok power out of it enough for my lights and a couple of low watts gadget (cellphone, 2v light, portable dvd) for couple of hours. But its seem to drain the 2v faster then I can charge Am I getting the most power out of my panel?Or should I place it on the roof? I'm in Texas and it gets hot and sunny the sun beam my room windows pretty good during 4pm-6pm.
- outside is going to be much better. You can't tell but glass is actully opaque to many ranges of 'light'. If you look at advertising for windows you may see claims to reduce sun fading of your carpet/ furniture. That is because the glass blocks UV. Solar panels get some of their energy from UV light. Also some windows are engineered to block IR to help insulate better when the house is cooler than the outside. Again, solar panels get some of their energy from light in the infrared range. And finally if you're charging batteries the 'off angle time' is still important. The amount of light absorbed is pretty closely related to the cosine of the angle that the sun is 'off' of the direct. so when the sun is 45 degrees off of perpendicular the panels still get cos45 =.707 or about 70% of the available energy. (In practice it's a little less than that because not as much energy gets to the panel to be absorbed as at midday). But anyway, you can figure two hours of morning or late afternoon sun will give you as much energy as hour of midday sun. So if the panel is inside, you miss out on that available energy.
- Q: Can solar panels be installed on a boat or yacht?
- Yes, solar panels can be installed on boats or yachts. In fact, they are becoming increasingly popular as a source of renewable energy for marine vessels. Solar panels can provide power for various onboard systems, such as lighting, electronics, and refrigeration, reducing the reliance on generators or shore power. Additionally, solar panels are lightweight, durable, and can be easily installed on the deck or roof of a boat or yacht, making them a practical and efficient choice for harnessing clean energy at sea.
- Q: Hi! I bought a Coleman 2 vdc cooler that pulls 9 amps. What size solar panel and amp-hour battery do I need? I only open it 3 times a day. It will hold about 3 gals of milk.
- If it pulls 9 amps continuously, that's 08 watts/hour or about 2.5 kwh/day. If it only pulls half that (does it cycle?) it's about .2 kwh/day. You only want to drain a lead-acid battery 50% or so, so you'll want a 5 or 2.5 kwh battery pack. A typical setup for the 5 kwh would be two L-6 batteries in series, and for the 2.5 kwh you could use 2 T-05 batteries in series. This does not account for days of cloud. If you regularly have cloudy days, size the battery pack for two or three days of use with no input (2-3 x the sizes given above). To charge them, you typically want panels that will charge your battery at least 5% of its capacity per hour (C/20). For 2 volt nominal panels that's 0 amps for the T-05 or 20 amps for the L-6 batteries. It's good to have more than that for battery life (it cuts down on what's called stratification), so you'll want probably 50-200 watts of panels for the T-05 and 300-400 for the L-6. You'll also need a charge controller. Peltier coolers are very inefficient. You'll save money by using a regular mini-fridge and an inverter. Most mini-fridges only draw 50 watts or so, so you're talking 600 watt-hours for a 50% duty cycle. This means two T-05 batteries will give you two days of use and you'll only need 20-50 watts of panel. DK
- Q: How do solar panels impact the electrical grid?
- Solar panels impact the electrical grid by generating clean and renewable energy from sunlight. When connected to the grid, they can feed excess electricity back into the system, reducing the overall demand for fossil fuel-based power generation. This helps to lower greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on traditional power sources. However, the intermittent nature of solar power requires careful grid management and integration to ensure stability and reliability.
- Q: Can solar panels be installed on a greenhouse?
- Yes, solar panels can be installed on a greenhouse. In fact, it is a common practice to install solar panels on greenhouses to harness the sunlight for both electricity generation and to provide supplemental lighting for the plants inside. This not only helps in reducing energy costs but also promotes sustainable and eco-friendly practices in agriculture.
- Q: How do solar panels affect the homeowner's insurance policy?
- Solar panels can have an impact on a homeowner's insurance policy as they are considered an additional structure or improvement to the property. While they may increase the overall value of the home, they also introduce potential risks such as damage from storms or accidents. Homeowners should inform their insurance provider about the installation of solar panels to ensure adequate coverage and potentially adjust their policy accordingly.
- Q: Can I add reflectors or mirrors around the solar panels to increase the power they generate?
- In the 70's when silicon was really expensive, they played with using fresnel lenses to focus the sunlight on small solar cells but these panels had to be on heliostats and aimed directly at the Sun. These days, with nano-technology, there's a renewed interest in the concept but the fundamental weakness is that there are diminishing returns, at some point, it's just less expensive to have more solar cells.
- Q: Interested in buying solar panels to save on electric bill.Any government help plans?
- I don't believe that there is any help yet.
- Q: I have a question about solar panels. What are the benefits of this system if I installed in my home. for example i know it produces electricity but does it do anything else? How many panel would you guys think I would need for 2000 sq ft. do you know if it produces hot water? Thanks for your help
- 30 years ago when the Hippies shut down our clean Nuclear plants They promised a clean miracle. No such thing! I'm sad to say at best Solar will only provide a fraction of our energy needs. (I guess if one abuses enough drugs they'll think up anything?) I am an apprentice for a Electric foreman; we calculate $50,000.00 in panels will meet the needs of a k foot house. So you would need a hundred grand. You'd save 00 dollers a month in electricity, but you'd be paying ,000 a month to pay off your loan of 00,000.00 in panels. God Bless You indeed a nice thought if it was practical.
- Q: China is building solar panels and have been for years. That is the most abundant energy in the world. My nieghbor has two panels on his roof and he actually sells energy back to the electric company. These panels cost about $30,000. each, because we don't produce them here on that level. If we did, that price would drop drastically. Other alternatives are also available. Drilling for oil will no change anything. Once you give the oil companie the go ahead, the will focus on that and the alternatives won't be developed any farther. We will be right back here in about 0 years. The price will not go down anyway. So why not switch half of our fuel to alternatives?
- I know for a fact that -China has a lot of Nuclear Bombs pointing at the US--- paid for by Wal-Mart
