- First take a ruler and pencil, make a square out line. try and find the studs and ONLY cut to the middle of the studs with a Razor Knife, You will need something to screw the new peace of sheet rock on to, so don't go over the stud. Once you get old peace down, you will more than likely have to do some repair to your plumbing or ceiling, as this is leaking somewhere. Look up Youtube for further instructions. - Q: I have a den that has 12inch acoustic ceiling tile that drips water sometimes when the weather is cool.I have checked and the attic above it is thoroughly insulated. The tile was installed on furring strips direct up against the fiberglass insulation,with no drywall in between the two, materials.The roof has ridge vents and the soffits,has perforated panels. - Pay for someone to fix it. 10 years and you didn't bother to think about water damages. It's more than visual damage.
- Q: We just had our first child, and his room is right above the garage. It is noticebly colder in his room, especially the floor. I used the plastic window kits and that helped, however, the floor is still extremely cold and I would like to at least check the insulation in the garage ceiling. Right now there is drywall on the ceiling, but I have no qualms about ripping it down, not real worried what it looks like. What should I look for...I believe there is very old (50 years) fiberglass insulation but i'm not 100% sure. If there is the old insulation there...should I look to replace it? If so, with what R value...Is this a project that someone without specific experience in the field could complete? I'm pretty handy but certainly not a pro. I'm not worried at all how it looks in the garage.
- It is a two person job. Take down the drywall. Examine the insulation that is there. If it looks good and fills the gap vertically and horizontally then leave it be. Add more insulation by getting rigid foam insulation and tacking it to the joists. Then drywall over the insulation. R-30 is a very good target, but go for what you can get. Don't oversuff cavities, that lowers the value of insulation.
- Q: the fabric lining my jeep's ceiling is missing in the front of my car. came down in bits and pieces and i wasn't able to reattach it. there's a material underneath that looks something like yellow fiberglass??? is that right? is it safe to be exposed to this? i don't use the car much so i haven't had it fixed yet but i'd like to know what i'm dealing with here. thanks for any help!

- Q: I am spraypainting my basement ceiling black, I am also putting up drywall. I am not sure how to finish the space above the top of the wall, where I can see insulation between joists. Any thoughts are welcome.

- Q: We just bought a house and our ceiling has the cottage cheese texture to it and it is cracked and broken in many placed so my husband wants to just take it off. I have told him that it may contain asbestos but he thinks he can do it on his own. So we are going to get it tested and if it does he just wants to remove it himself. My question is, is this a job anyone can do?
- If it is asbestos it is hazardous material and should be removed by a company that is trained to remove that type of ceiling. Otherwise, you're could be putting yourselves at risk if you don't take the proper precautions.
- Q: Is it fiberglass, it looks like foam?
- It is thermal insulation. It is usually fiberglass. The foil is for mounting against a wood/combustible ceiling. A non-burning barrier is required. The insulation is so the heat if the lamps doesn't cook the wiring. Most contemporary units are 90 degrees C. Half of the homes have 60 degree C wiring, so they're damaged anyhow.

- The paper is called a vapor barrier. It always faces the inside of the house. The vapor barrier keeps the moisture in the house. This makes the house more comfortable and increases the efficiency of the insulation. Moisture that gets into the insulation fills some of the air pockets and conducts heat through the insulation. That is bad. The air pockets help the insulation keep the inside and outside temperatures apart. Also, moisture can promote mildew or mold. Moisture in the air is also good for our respiratory systems. The proper installation procedure for your insulation should also be somewhere on the packaging.
