product description
The photovoltaic effect was experimentally demonstrated first by French physicist Edmond Becquerel. In 1839, at age 19, he built the world's first photovoltaic cell in his father's laboratory. Willoughby Smith first described the "Effect of Light on Selenium during the passage of an Electric Current" in a 20 February 1873 issue of Nature. In 1883 Charles Fritts built the first solid state photovoltaic cell by coating the semiconductor selenium with a thin layer of gold to form the junctions; the device was only around 1% efficient.
Following the 1973 oil crisis oil companies used their higher profits to start (or buy) solar firms, and were for decades the largest producers. Exxon, ARCO, Shell, Amoco (later purchased by BP) and Mobil all had major solar divisions during the 1970s and 1980s. Technology companies also participated, including General Electric, Motorola, IBM, Tyco and RCA.[16]

- Q: Hi, i want to please a solar panel in Lima Peru, my Latitude is -2 and longitude -77. I understand that since i am in the southern hemisphere, my panel should be pointing north. However, i am using a program called pvdesigner, and according to this, y should face my panel with and azimuth of 00degrees (0 = south) and a tilt of 60degrees. Does this make any sense?thanks
- It doesn't make sense to me. I am at latitude 37.7,and my panels face south at about 38 degrees. Yours should be pointed north as you suggest. Being so close to the equator, and in the absence of any better information, an angle of 2 degrees would be appropriate. However, choosing the best angle will greatly to your overall efficiency, so I would try to find a more credible source, How about the folks from whom you buy the panels. They would know precisely. By the way, if you haven't installed the system yet you might consider going to a high voltage system to cut known line losses in the conductors between the panes and the inverter, I did that plus increasing the conductor size over that recommended by the manufacturer. I gained about two percent in efficiency
- Q: How do solar panels reduce carbon emissions?
- Solar panels reduce carbon emissions by generating electricity from sunlight, which is a clean and renewable energy source. Unlike fossil fuels, solar power does not produce any greenhouse gas emissions or pollutants during operation. By replacing traditional energy sources, such as coal or gas-fired power plants, with solar panels, we can significantly reduce the amount of carbon dioxide and other harmful emissions that are released into the atmosphere, helping to mitigate climate change and improve air quality.
- Q: What is the average payback period for solar panels?
- The average payback period for solar panels is typically around 7 to 10 years. However, this can vary depending on factors such as location, system size, local energy rates, and available incentives.
- Q: Are there any health risks associated with solar panels?
- No, there are no significant health risks associated with solar panels. Solar panels do not emit any harmful substances or pollutants that could pose a threat to human health. However, it is important to handle and install them properly to avoid any potential accidents or injuries.
- Q: Can solar panels be installed on ground-mounted structures?
- Yes, solar panels can be installed on ground-mounted structures. In fact, ground-mounted solar panel systems are a popular choice for residential, commercial, and utility-scale projects. They offer flexibility in terms of location, orientation, and scalability, making them an ideal option for areas with limited roof space or shading issues. Ground-mounted structures can be customized to optimize solar panel angles for maximum energy production and are easier to install and maintain compared to rooftop systems.
- Q: Can solar panels be installed on a recreational vehicle (RV)?
- Yes, solar panels can be installed on a recreational vehicle (RV). Installing solar panels on an RV allows for the generation of electricity from sunlight, providing a renewable and independent power source while on the go. This is particularly useful for boondocking or camping in remote locations where access to traditional power sources may be limited.
- Q: Can solar panels be used in areas with high levels of windstorms?
- Yes, solar panels can be used in areas with high levels of windstorms. However, it is important to ensure that the solar panels are properly designed, installed, and secured to withstand the strong winds. Reinforcements and adequate mounting systems can be used to make solar panels more resistant to windstorms.
- Q: what is the average cost, for a single family home, to install solar panels? I live in CA.
- Although its costs have been going down a little, solar power is still pretty expensive. To power a home you are looking at at between $8000 to $20,000 dollars (it will eventually pay for itself). There are systems that tie into the existing local power supply so that you have the city's power for back up (note: most power companies will buy electricty from you if you make more than you use). Then, of course, there are stand alone systems that operate without anyother power source (these are best for use in a place where electric lines aren't available or practical).
- Q: How much electricity can a solar panel generate?
- The amount of electricity a solar panel can generate depends on various factors such as the size and efficiency of the panel, the amount of sunlight it receives, and the location. On average, a standard solar panel can produce anywhere from 250 to 400 watts of electricity per hour.
- Q: How do you know when it is a good deal to buy a solar panel. For example, what is a good cost per watt, how many volts should I expect, etc.
- first okorder / example: house roof is 20' x 20' 20' = 240, so sq. inches of roof is = 57,600 say rain fall for your area is 3 per month on average. 57,600 x 3 = 72,800 of rain collected. Using the conversion chart link above, that many cubic inches of water = 750 gallons of water free per month. Look at your water bill and see how much you use. Solar panels take on average 2-20 yrs to pay themselves off, just in time for them to be replaced. Paddle wheels go on for just about forever. We still find large paddle wheel mills in the USA that are over 200 yrs old, and still functioning.
