Q: I have two solar panels that were going to be trashed at work. I want to use them to charge batteries on my RV but i noticed they put out around 20 volts in direct sunlight. So i am wondering: -isn't this way too much voltage for a 2 volt system? -do a need some sort of a regulator connected to keep them from overcharging?: You can use them without the regulator . Just make sure you use blocking diodes so the the power does not flow back into the panels . You can get those at radio shack of some electronic store or off OKorder for a few bucks .

If this is a science fair project, there are some possible paths that I'd suggest: ) Make your own cupric oxide panel. With just one square foot, you can harvest perhaps 0.5 mW in bright sun - enough to power a solar calculator; -or- 2) Buy a panel to light your 60 watt bulb. You could probably get away with a panel that is 6 square feet, but would use a car headlight as the lamp. If you wanted to light a regular household bulb, you would need electronics to step up the voltage, and you would lose a sizeable fraction of the energy just in the conversion. -or- 3) Buy broken solar cell pieces, or individual solar cells, and solder them together into your own panel. This is a LOT of trouble, and is a finicky process to get working and keep working. And it may not end up being cheaper than buying a ready-made panel. But you can claim that you made it! By the way, crystalline silicon panels are in the ballpark of 5% efficient, and a 3' x 3' one would produce in the neighborhood of 20 watts.

I am confident of the layout of the parallel circuit I want to create, however I don't know how to properly connect the tabs that come from the sides of the panels. Any help on connecting them?: Each solar panel will be wired to each other in parallel if you have more then one. When you wire in parallel the amps(current) from each panel will add to the total sum of current, but the total voltage stays the same. The voltage must match the rest of your system. For example, if your are using 2 volt solar panels you must be using 2 volt batteries and voltage regulator. Voltage regulator must be rated above maximum voltage and current(amps). Connect the output from the solar panels to a properly rated regulator, solar panel voltage regulators are rated by maximum voltage and amps, that will shut off the current flow to the batteries once the batteries are sufficiently charged there by preventing damage to the batteries. The way that you figure the rating needed for the regulator is by adding the maximum amps for each solar panel, this should be listed on the solar panel, and if they are 2 volt panels and they are connected in parallel then max voltage should be around 22 volts. It's the amperes that is most importance when choosing a regulator

And as you can see it hasn't progressed all that much. But Developers are saying that within the next five years solar technology will increase dramatically. With more and more people looking for greener and easier forms of energy, there are many looking towards solar. In fact some energy companies are willing to buy the energy that you produce from you. And with new forms of thinner silicon panels, we are looking at a more efficient kind of panels. Unfortunately for us, at the moment thin-film panel silicon isn't as efficient as we are looking for. They are flimsier than the traditional panels and do not contain as much silicon to produce the electricity. But as soon as the demand increases, the production will increase, and if more companies are looking to invest in solar, then there will be more competition, with more competition- we are going to have improved technology, and with more improved technology, the prices will go down. Because at the moment, there is not much of an incentive for solar power. Compared to the Kilowatt- hour produced from coal and other forms of energy, solar does not produce as much. Experts are saying that within the next five years, not having solar panels on your house will be as silly as building a house without plumbing. The future on solar panels looks bright.
