Aluminium foil acts as a total barrier to light and oxygen (which cause fats to oxidise or become rancid), odours and flavours, moistness, and germs, it is used broadly in food and pharmaceutical packaging. The purpose of aluminium is to make long-life packs (aseptic processing|aseptic packaging) for drinks and dairy goods, which allows storing without refrigeration. Aluminium foil containers and trays are used to bake pies and to pack takeaway meals, ready snacks and long life pet foods.

Aluminium foil is widely sold into the consumer market, often in rolls of 500 mm (20 in) width and several metres in length. It is used for wrapping food in order to preserve it, for example, when storing leftover food in a refrigerator (where it serves the additional purpose of preventing odour exchange), when taking sandwiches on a journey, or when selling some kinds of take-away or fast food. Tex-Mex restaurants in the United States, for example, typically provide take-away burritos wrapped in aluminium foil.

Aluminium foils thicker than 25 μm (1 mil) are impermeable to oxygen and water. Foils thinner than this become slightly permeable due to minute pinholes caused by the production process.

Aluminium foil has a shiny side and a matte side. The shiny side is produced when the aluminium is rolled during the final pass. It is difficult to produce rollers with a gap fine enough to cope with the foil gauge, therefore, for the final pass, two sheets are rolled at the same time, doubling the thickness of the gauge at entry to the rollers. When the sheets are later separated, the inside surface is dull, and the outside surface is shiny. This difference in the finish has led to the perception that favouring a side has an effect when cooking. While many believe that the different properties keep heat out when wrapped with the shiny finish facing out, and keep heat in with the shiny finish facing inwards, the actual difference is imperceptible without instrumentation. The reflectivity of bright aluminium foil is 88% while dull embossed foil is about 80%.

Aluminium (or aluminum; see spelling differences) is a chemical element in the boron group with symbol Al and atomic number 13. It is a silvery white, soft, ductile metal. Aluminium is the third most abundant element (after oxygen and silicon), and the most abundant metal in the Earth's crust. It makes up about 8% by weight of the Earth's solid surface. Aluminium metal is so chemically reactive that native specimens are rare and limited to extreme reducing environments. Instead, it is found combined in over 270 different minerals. The chief ore of aluminium is bauxite.

Aluminium is remarkable for the metal's low density and for its ability to resist corrosion due to the phenomenon of passivation. Structural components made from aluminium and its alloys are vital to the aerospace industry and are important in other areas of transportation and structural materials. The most useful compounds of aluminium, at least on a weight basis, are the oxides and sulfates.

Despite its prevalence in the environment, no known form of life uses aluminium salts metabolically. In keeping with its pervasiveness, aluminium is well tolerated by plants and animals. Owing to their prevalence, potential beneficial (or otherwise) biological roles of aluminium compounds are of continuing interest.

The earliest citation given in the Oxford English Dictionary for any word used as a name for this element is alumium, which British chemist and inventor Humphry Davy employed in 1808 for the metal he was trying to isolate electrolytically from the mineral alumina. The citation is from the journal Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London: "Had I been so fortunate as to have obtained more certain evidences on this subject, and to have procured the metallic substances I was in search of, I should have proposed for them the names of silicium, alumium, zirconium, and glucium."

Davy settled on aluminum by the time he published his 1812 book Chemical Philosophy: "This substance appears to contain a peculiar metal, but as yet Aluminum has not been obtained in a perfectly free state, though alloys of it with other metalline substances have been procured sufficiently distinct to indicate the probable nature of alumina."[69] But the same year, an anonymous contributor to the Quarterly Review, a British political-literary journal, in a review of Davy's book, objected to aluminum and proposed the name aluminium, "for so we shall take the liberty of writing the word, in preference to aluminum, which has a less classical sound."

The -ium suffix conformed to the precedent set in other newly discovered elements of the time: potassium, sodium, magnesium, calcium, and strontium (all of which Davy isolated himself). Nevertheless, -um spellings for elements were not unknown at the time, as for example platinum, known to Europeans since the 16th century, molybdenum, discovered in 1778, and tantalum, discovered in 1802. The -um suffix is consistent with the universal spelling alumina for the oxide (as opposed to aluminia), as lanthana is the oxide of lanthanum, and magnesia, ceria, and thoria are the oxides of magnesium, cerium, and thorium respectively.

The aluminum spelling is used in the Webster's Dictionary of 1828. In his advertising handbill for his new electrolytic method of producing the metal in 1892, Charles Martin Hall used the -um spelling, despite his constant use of the -ium spelling in all the patents[58] he filed between 1886 and 1903. It has consequently been suggested[by whom?] that the spelling reflects an easier-to-pronounce word with one fewer syllable, or that the spelling on the flyer was a mistake.[citation needed] Hall's domination of production of the metal ensured that aluminum became the standard English spelling in North America.

Q: go cart building for square tubing?
Paranoia is a side effect of smoking weed.foil is ok.
Q: is it possible to store first morning urine for about an hour before test?? my period is due tomorrow and i have all teh period-like symptoms that i normally have.this cycle i decided not to quot;tryquot; and let things be.i decided to test on the day of the period(if the period doesnt show) because early testing increases hopes and disappointments.Thats y i didnt buy any ept's at all because knowing me,i would've started testing 1dpo!!!.so i will have to go and buy one tomorrow morning.can i store the first morning pee in a cup covered with aluminum foil?
ewww!! why don't you just get the test and do it the next day?
Q: why do aluminum cans degrade more slowly than cans made of iron?
im a lady, a woman, a girli got no guts to help you out.sorry, wrong number.
Q: Not for Florida, too warm.
I love youLOL!! that was so funny! Thanks for making me laugh today.
Q: why is it when I line the pan with alum foil and cover the top with same my hamburger patties don't get done
Aluminum is a poor heat conductor It can actually be a heat shield Notice that KFC always wrap their corn on the cob in aluminum foil to keep them warmIf you're just cooking hamburger patties, I suggest that you use a BBQ or just pan-fry and not in the oven If you must use an oven, line the bottom of your oven with aluminum foil then put the meat patties directly on the rack; Broil to seal in taste.
Q: How many grams of aluminum must react to displace all the silver from 28.6 g of silver nitrate? The reaction occurs in aqueous solution.
So you have 0.168mol of nitrateIt has a charge of -1Aluminum has a charge of 3+, so you only need 1 aluminum per 3 nitrate, or 1/3 as many AlSo that means you need 0.0560mol of Al0.0560 x 26.98 gmol 1.51g Al+3 ionThe answer above me is incorrectThey do not round properly or use use proper significant digitsThey took the molar mass of silver nitrate to three sig digits off the batThis is incorrect because the molar mass of silver nitrate is given to you, whereas you only apply sig digits to numbers you come up with yourself.
Q: I live in Greece, where last week a police officer tore up an aluminum package of a Muslim - he thought there were drugs - and it turned out it was his copy of the Q'ran.Muslims were infuriated and started riots again in Athens, breaking into and burning stores.A spokesman for the Muslim community accused Greece of not being tolerant of other religions (and it is true in some cases) and that Greece's democracy was hypocritical. My question is thisIf someone of a different faith got their holy book ripped up accidentally in a Muslim country, what would happen? Would the government be forced to apologize? Would the citizens of said country support a riot of infidels because of an incident like this?
NopeThe Govt probably wouldn't apologisebut the officer responsible mightAlso, if the riot was in any way violent then those rioting would be incarcerated just like any other citizen of Australia if they had done soMuslims are leaving those countries for better onesthat is seeking better opportunitiesThey bring their families with themand they are breeding more muslimssoon, i.e20 years, most if not all western countries will be majority muslimThat's the way it isA peaceful invasionand then they will elect Muslims to the seats of powerand laws will changeAn ancient technique for taking over the worldbut effectiveThat's the least of our worriesWith a bit of global warming thrown inI've heard figures being touted around that within 100 years the remaining habitable surface of the Earth will sustain 500 million peopleSo you see, the population of the Earth would go from a projected estimate of 40 Billion to just 500 million in a very short period of timeNo doubt, this will not be a peaceful arrangement deciding which 39.5 Billion people should die so that 500 Million can liveI should think whether or not someone can read their holy book is trite.
Q: How can old aluminum foil be repurposed in the kitchen?

There are several creative ways to reuse old pieces of aluminum foil in the kitchen. You can use them to cover bowls or dishes to keep food fresh, line baking sheets to prevent sticking, or create a makeshift funnel for pouring liquids. Additionally, crumpled foil can be used as a scrubber to clean pots and pans, and flattened foil can be repurposed for crafts or as a reflective surface for heat distribution in cooking. Always ensure the foil is clean and free of any food residue or sharp edges before reusing.

Q: I've heard of works toilet bowl cleaner and foil, but I'm wondering what else works that are household itemsBesides baking soda and vinegar, is there anything that reacts with each other?
No sleeves, but a 350 would be better to build than a 305 and externally, its identicalA bored/stroked 305 to a 334 would still have less grunt than a stout 350.
Q: I'm a female that sweats really bad!! I want to get botox in my arm pitsHas anyone done this to stop the sweat? Will insurance pay for it? how did it work out? Also what is the best antiperspirant out for sweat, that ALSO SMELLS NICE AND FEMANINE??
Potential energy and kinetic energy are the same with this kind of problemIt is like if you had a 12 kg cement block 10 meters high and calculated the potential energy of that block, it would be the same as the kinetic energy if you let the block fall and contact the ground, so here to the KE PE
