Q: I bought a used printer but it did not have the power cable with it, but I have an old power cable from another printer. The only visble difference in the cables is that the colorful end that goes into the printer has a plastic notch on it that is in a different spot. My old one has the notch in the middle where is I need it off to the left. Can't I just shave the notch off and have it fit?
It's hard to say. Electrical equipment and parts are made for a specific reasons. Now, if you modify the power cable, it's possible that it may work. But, then again, there is also the possibility that it could do more damage than good. It will totally be your call.

They typically need to be derated signficantly for DC. By how much depends on the device - you need to consult the relevant data sheet. To give you some idea, I have some small toggle switches here that are rated for 1A @ 125V AC but only 1A @ 30V DC. That is not at all untypical.

On a personal level: Buy a car made before 1973. With no computer parts, an EMP would not have any effect. Get a radio and TV that uses the old vacuum tubes. They are not effected by an EMP. And NEVER EVER get a heart pacemaker. If you got one of those, you are toast.

I love math, physics and chemistry, and have come trhough computer programming unharmed. Chemical engineering tends to be VERY transferable to other disciplines, at least in my experience and where I've seen friends of mine end up. I'm not sure how well it connects to electrical as I've never thought about going that route myself. . . but there actually is a fair amount of math in ChE if actually are looking for it. Neither EE or ChE are usually regarded as very easy among engineering disciplines, so you're in for a challenge either way. I got out of ChE for grad school because I didn't like the whole factory/refinery idea so much. . . and environmental engineering was more than happy to take me.

In order to get the most from your Mac as sound generator use a reasonably good audio interface (like the E-mu 0404 usb or something from M-audio). This should be connected to a mixer and this one to the PA system. You also should connect your microphone and guitars to the mixer too, so you can control the volume of each instrument, including the Mac. Although you can connect the mac directly to an Amp I won't do that in order to get control of volume and have better sound. Computers generally don't like live performing. Electric voltage can be unstable (heavy power consumption and lights on-off pattern). Use the appropriate electric equipment to make sure the computer always receive the correct amount of voltage. If not, it can fail and ruin your performance. Make a test where possible.

Q: I'm a physics students and often come up with seemingly stupid questions I can't really find an answer to. If the human body acts as a resistor of around 100 kilo-ohms or more, how is it that I could die by grounding myself with the hot terminal of an electrical outlet?I understand that the average current flowing through me is the product of RMS-voltage over resistancebut this value doesn't seem NEARLY high enough to do any damage much less for me to detect.Thanks!
Mr. C. has an excellent answer. I might also add that as an electrical worker I find it very important to make sure that when I work with electrical circuits and safety equipment that I try and eliminate a flow path from live to ground that can pass through my heart area. We always use safety equipment and follow procedure but at times you have no choice but to get very close to energized exposed circuits. They can and do bite. I have been known to take an extra step and insulate exposed energized areas that are near my legs when I am working with energized circuits above my waist.

You have the number, 15 watts. but that is a maximum, the actual power will be less than that. If you need the actual power, you cannot calculate it, you have to measure it. .
