- Q: I'm getting a garden ready for spring here in January.The soil is kind of compact and clay like. I have a bunch of leaves sitting on top of it now.I plan to till all the leaves into the soil, and till the soil to break it all up.Thinking about adding some dried manure that I can pick up from the lowes.Also, saw some stuff called clay breaker which is gypsum.Will it be a good idea to add perlite too?
- Web search your county agricultural extension office to find out what the soil is like in your area. Talk to your neighbors who garden. The only real way to know what you need is to soil test. But, you just about can't add to much organic matter. I don't use perlite in my garden. I don't need it because I keep adding whatever organic matter I can find---leaves, hay, compost. I can't comment on the gypsum. I just don't know. I don't need anything like that either.
- Q: I just moved here from GA, and I'm looking for REALLY inexpensive furnishings/decorations. I live in Cambridge so I'd like to find stores close by, but really I'll drive anywhere if I can find things really cheaply. Thanks!
- Any time a store describes itself as a specialty store, it will not be cheap. Try the Big Box stores like Lowes and Home Depot. K-mart and Target also have garden sections.

- I think catalogs are excellent sources for inspiration. Some more reasonable ideas for us poor folk can be found in Better Homes Gardens, Good Housekeeping and Country living. But I enjoy walking through design centers that have vignettes of rooms set up just to steal ideas. I find that what they've done, I can modify to my own color scheme, my own lifestyle and my own budget! I live very near the beach (no view) and I draw much inspiration from nature around me.

- Any determinate, ideally a cherry style. I easily have terrible success with those indeterminate behemoths. Zone 8b (tomato flowers often bypass ineffective around right here in June as quickly as every day temps hit a hundred+)

- Q: I have a ground floor studio flat (999 years, share of freehold) which has exclusive use of the garden - a side gate to both the studio and the garden (about 40x40 feet) ensures this. The studio is at the rear of the house and adjoins the garden. There is a garden hut in the corner of the garden.I am thinking that a far more ambitious structure in the garden - such as a home office say 15x10 feet - would greatly expand the amenity of the studio. How likely would I be to secure permission to build - both from the local authoriity (Eastbourne) and from the other freeholders? Or do I even need permission?
