I think I like both majors and as far as I know Mechanical is the science of moving objects where you can get more hands-on experience , while electrical engineering is more imaginative. You can't really see electricity , thus it's more challenging ! To be honest , I like challenges but I don't want to end up regretting any decisions! I believe you grasp the essential intellectual difference between the two fields. In the study of both disciplines there are laboratories where you build things. In electrical labs you build circuits, and in mechanical labs you use lathes, drill presses and milling machines to build mechanical devices. When you are out of school and working, you will most likely not be doing anything hands on except inspecting equipment, systems and facilities. Your principal work will be analyzing, documenting, reporting and creating design/construction documents. I had an orientation to both fields (mechanical and electrical) as from the time I was about 13 I rebuilt engines in a machine shop and loved to build all sorts of mechanical things on a farm. But I also liked to design and build receivers, transmitters, amplifiers, etc. Ulitmately, I was attracted more to electrical engineering because it seemed more esoteric and mysterious; but I think I would have been happy and successful in both fields, and possibly even in structural engineering. These fields apply math and the other sciences, and require creativity to find ideal solutions. Civil engineering seemed too mundane to me.

I have no idea what people in my major CAN do, so when I go to job fairs, I look clueless to everyone there. The worst part is that I AM clueless. Engineering is all pretty much the same, regardless of what one builds. Consider mechanical engineering. One can either build cars or fix cars. Being able to design engines takes a master's degree at least. Fixing cars can be something done with a trade school Associates degree. This is basically the difference between electricians and electrical engineers. Obviously there are many more jobs for the electricians. There is commercial contracting or residential service or any combination of the two. Of course, you will spend your career wiring circuit breakers and very little else. To get an idea of what an actual electrical design engineer does, take apart anything electrical. All those little chips are entire circuit boards. The little metal legs are power inputs and signal inputs/outputs. Larger circuits are built up from the chips. One has to be able to read the data sheet on the chip and then be able to build a circuit around it. This is far more complicated than replacing blown fuses and explains why design engineers need masters degrees or (preferably) PHD's. If you like building things and are comitted enough to endure the many semesters of math and physics required (besides the electrical engineering itself) then design engineering is going to be both enjoyable and very profitable. Of course, becomming a technician first and then furthering one's education is another route to becomming an actual designer. Remember, besides science, economics is also an issue and education is incredibly expensive in America because people refuse to fund affordable public education with tax increases.

Engineers have all doors open to them in both the technical and managerial aspect. With Electrical or Electronics Engineering, you can become a manager of any IT firm or any electricity company. All electrodomestic equipment require as well some sort of electric department which should be ran under an electrical engineer. Construction companies also use electrical engineers to map circuits in houses. Engineers are also suited for business administration and are even preferred over people who studied business management because of their technical knowledge and analytical thinking.
